A True Tale of Johnnie.
Nowaday*, when JobnBie is bad at
school the teacher take» out her bo<4|
aad gives a black mark. Next day
Johnnie is worse thau ever. Fifty
year» ago wheo Johnnie waa bad at
school the teacher took down a dog
wood sprout, made about two dozen
black marks across bis bare legs, and
Johnnie never repeated the offence
Fifty years ago Johnnie got up at
daylight, started tbe hre, fed the
horses, milked a dozen lougborned
cows that gave barely enough milk
to put into tbe coffee, chopped and
brought iu wood enough to last
mother all day, ate a hearty break
fast and walked five miles to school.
Today Johnnie doesn't get up at all
unless he is forced to do so, eats little
or no breakfast, goes out behind tbe
barn to uuoke a cigarette aud if tbe
school bouse is over three blocks
away be grunts about tbe long dis
tance he has to walk. Tbe Johnnie
of tifly years ago is now a bale, hearty
man Fifty years from now the John
nie of today will be dead and buried.
Isn't that a true tale of Johnnie?
