Brief Manner.
Misfortune befell Wm. Hicking last week,
while working in the mill and resulted in a
badly injured hand. He bad been operating
the edger for several days and on Thursday,
while running a cant through tbe machine,
be attempted to free a splinter which bad
caught in tbe saw, au i while thus eugaged,
the caut hud run its length and tbe roller
dropped upon bia band, crushing it and
forcing it to the saw, where the thumb was
badly mangled, and tbe bone from the first
joint torn away. Unaccountably, yet a
lucky ocoureuce. tbe roller in some rnanuer
rebounded affording on opportunity to ex
tricate his arm from tbe heavy roller, other
wise a serious accident would have resulted

at first thought to be necessary, but under
the care of Dr Houston, the wound is im
proving nicely.
J. C. Taylor and wife were at Bandon hav

weeks ago, to reside with Mr. Machado’s

Mrs. J. Hamblock nr., iuforms uh that ber

will viait Mr. and Mrs. Alanson Steward,
tbe latter a cousin, at Owen, 111., also ex
pects to visit Mr. and Mrs. Wood, (nee Rose
Long) of Milwaukee, Wis. He will return
in July.
J. F. Thomson aud F. Aiken, who departed
several weeks ago for Merlin, have returned
and now occupy positions in the mill. They
still have a longing for "Coos.”
J. Lackstrom aud J. Hill were passengers
to Marshfield last week. The latter who
was engineer in tbe shipyard, has given up
the position.
John Whoberry, representing A. Helming
& Co., of Marshfield, was at Bullards last
Wednesday, buying wool and hides. He
had been down the coast as far as Crescent
City.
