Liquor Dealers Will Try Initiative
Too.
By moans of the initiative, the liq
uor dealei'H of tbe state hope to secure
an amendment to the local option law
at tbe general election next June. Pe
titions are beipg circulated demand
ing that an amendment to /be law,
similar to that proposed by tbe Jayne
bill at tbe laat session of the legisla
ture, be submitted to tbe voters.
The proposed apo^ndmeut would
give to each precinct in tbe state local
pelf-government in tbe matter uf pro
hibition. No precinct could be made
.‘•dry” by tbe vote of the adjoining
precinct», nor of tpp county in which
it la situated.
Another important feature ia tbe
provision that 30 per cent instead of
10 per cent of tbe voters are required
|q call an election in any precinct,
group of precincts, or county, on tbe
question of prohibition.
Tbq petitions were drawn under
/be direction of tbe Brewers’ and

Story of a Now Famous Play.
The story of “The Great Bine Grass Der
by” conoerna the fortunes of all interesting
group of people representative of the moun
tain and bloe grass yogic ns of Kentacky.
The lenely, half savage life of the moun
taineers, with their strong loves and strong
er bates, their bitter feuds rivaling in vin-
dioativeuess th. tkiraican vendetta, yet ele
vated above bloodthirstiness by a sense of
religious duty, is clearly set forth and sterns
all the more unique and strange in oontrast
with the peaoet'ul. pastoral characteristics
of the blue grass country. Numerous oppor
tunities are given for the display of the
strongest passions. About the fortunes of
the hero—a handsome, obivalrona young
Kentuckian—is woven a web of love, treaeb
ery, hate and revenge, from which escape
seems impossible. There is the ever fasci
nating story of the man wbope past is shad
owed by a great crime, and whose after life
is one great struggle to evade the Nemesis
who pursues him. Many scenes, character
istic of Kentuoky life, are introduced, gen
uine echoes from the plantation—the play,
the frolio and music of the darkies after the
day’s work is done—the throng, the excite
ment and the acclaim that attend the close
finish of a famous race, which, by the way.
is represented in an entirely dilierent man
ner from any other race known to the stage.
The heroine is a new type—entirely unlike
the slangy aonbrette, a young girl brought
up in the mountains and to whom nature
has given dauntless courage, a great sonl
allied with charming simplicity, shyness
am) true womanliness, a sweet, pare and
daiDty creature, lovely to look upon, and
"As winsome and fair as the blackberry
