EDITORIAL.
Carnegie believes that five of the
civilized uatioos Pan secure universal
jroaco by combining tbeir influence.
The scheme seems to encompass the
condition, that five nations banded
together and fully prepared for war,
could dictate to tbo rest of the world.
This would work very well, perhaps,
so long as peace continued amcng the
five allies, but wbeu trouble drives
his wedge into the combine, the allies
would forget al) about keeping the
peace. Love for hnruanity, Dot force,
must be the power that will retain
| be dove of peace.
Valedictory.
With this issue of the R ecorder we
sever our connection with tbo jour
nal. having «old the plant to Mr. A.
T. Fetter, formerly of Drain.
It is not without some regret that
we step down and out, as we have
served long in the R ecorder office,
and old associations cannot be broken
off without a twinge of sorrow at the
parting.
During the years that we have
labored in this field we have desired
to do that which was right, have not
counted the cost, nor swerved because
of money consideration, but have al
ways striven for justice, reformation,
and higher morality.
If we have crossed others or caused
them to feel unkindly toward ns, it
was done in the line of duty, and not
for the purpose of contention, and if,
at any time, we have failed to give
proper credit, or to appreciate the ef
forts of our patrons, it was done
through do purpose on our part to
jujnre or ignore,
In Mr. Fetter, we believe anr
friends aud patrons will find an ablo
newspaper man, and we ask that he
be cordially And liberally supported.
Town building is best done where all
work together, aud as there has al
ways been a spirit of union among
the business mon of the town for tbe
welfare of tbe place, we hope that
that spirit may increase rather than
diminish.
With tbe welfare and best interest
of the people of Bandon and vicinity
and tbe county at heart, we bid you
adieu,
D. E. S titt .

Economical aud Juat.
Tbe Portland Evening Telegram
of Gctober 12tb, says; “In tbe extent,
variety and geueral excellence of its
agricultural display at the Fair, Col
orado easily leads all the states par
ticipating, with tbe exception of Ore
gon. This was accomplished by tbe
Colorado State Commission, despite
tbe fact that the appropriation availa
ble was small.”
One of tbe claims of tbe advocates
of woman suffrage has been, that, in
asmuch as women huve, all tbeir lives,
been forced to grapple with the prob
lem of making a dollar go as far as
possible, woman suffrage would intro
duce economy into the admiuistratiou
of public affairs, and that public offi
cials, responsible to women voters,
would bave to give a good account of
themselves in the expenditure of pub
lic moneys.
Tbe above facts seem to bear out
this contention, aud they do uot Con
stitute tbe only evidence of this char
acter which comes from Colorado. In
1902, tbe Humane Society of Colors
do, at an expenditure of $5,00(1, han
dled 1300casesof children, aud 08,000
cases of animals, while, in the same
year, in New York City, it co6t $272,-
000 to handle 6500 eases of cbildien,
4000 of whom were simply lost cbil
dren, and 53.093 cases of animals.
Woman suffrage seems to be econom
ical as well as just.

First, soak the corn or bunion in

Help the Under Dog.
Help the man or woman who is
down! Help tho child who has bad
incompetent parents. It is a world
of help. Did you ever think of that
a little while!
Hasn't somebody ever helped yon!
Think this over. He is dead, maybe,
or gone far away. You couldn’t re
pay him if you would. There is no
repayment of many things. But if
yon had a chance, and it was needed,
wouldn't you help that person! If
not, we pity you.
This is tbe slightest phase of the
great subject, Help One Another,
Help those who maybe will never
bo ablo to help you in return. This
is tbe law of Love. Your reward is
in the Kingdom, and this is within
yon.
The under dog may bo a scrub;
help him, nevertheless. The weaker
man may be in one wny or another
unworthy; help him, nevertheless.
Tbe child that you despise may be, if
helped, tbe mother of better men thau
yon! Help her.
Have yon strength! Lend a little
to the weak. Have you courage!
Turn a little of it into tbo conduits of
the nnconragoons.
Help the under dog even if tbe up
per one bites yon. Help to give hu
manity a sqnaro deal. You will go
hence soon, and perhaps will meet
Abon Ben Adbem, who was of all men
frost beloved by God because he best
loved his fellow men, or that sweet
singer, Coleridge, who wrote.
"'He prnyeth best who loveth best
“AH thingfl both great and
“For the dear God, who knoweth best,
“He made and loveth all.”
How long do yon live! Only a few
years. Help. then, while you live.
And help them that neoi help Tbe
strong can take care of themselves.
Help the under dog. Give the weak
a show.—Oregon Jonrnal.
Some Sranonable Advice.
It may be a piece of superfluous
advice to urge people nt this season of
tbe year to lay io a supply of Cham
berlain's Congh Remedy. It is al
most sure to be needed before winter
is over, and much more prompt and
satisfactory results are obtained when
taken as soon as a cold is contracted,
and before it has become settled io
the system, which can |only be done
by keeping tbe remedy at hand. This
remedy is so widely known and so
altogether good that no one should
hesitate about buying it in preference
to any other. It is for sale by C. Y.

uplifting aud ennobling. Let every
mother make her home attractive.
She can adoru the walls of her home
with pictures, inexpensive ones if mro
essary. A now tidy may be made for
a chair occasionally, table covers re
uewed, beautiful flowers kept in view,
and in other ways the rooms may be
made bright aud cheerfill. AU these
as surely give touch and shape to th
child’s mind as that the sunshine
paints the hues or tbe flowers. A
child who goes out into the world
from such a home, a home presided
over by a mother who has striven to
make it pleasant and attractive, who
has striven to keep high aud noble
ideals before tier children, one leaving
sncb a home carries in bis memory a

tbe riches of this world.
As a rule busbands are just what

PURE WATER.
Fire and water are two elements
which man canuot get along without
—especially water. Tbe water we are
writing «bout in this article, however,
is not tbe fluid that ships sail upon,
or boys swim in, or in which fish live,
but a different brand. It is just as
powerful as tbe kiad which flows in
its magnificence over Niagara Falls,
or turns the wheels of the mighty
mills and factories situatod along tbe
banks of some swiftly runuing stream.
Its action is like tbe tiny drop which
finally wears away tbe largest stone
Unlike tbe pure, cold, crystal water
of our forefathers, or tbe sweet und
tasty fluid drawn from tbe well by
means of the moss covered and iron
bound bucket, its action is evil, cruel,
and heart-breaking.
The cold water we refer to comes
in different colore 1 bottles with vari
egated labels. Nagging is one brand.
Tbe habit of finding fault. Picking
flaws and never scattering a ray of
sunshine in the shape of a gentle
word of praise for a giro J actiou per
formed. Nothing is so discouraging
to a person, whether a grown up or a
growing child, when conscientiously
trying to do right, to be barped at
because be did not do better, aud.
wbeu persisted in, breeds discontent
aud rebellion. There is a difference
between roproof and fault finding
just as there are different kinds of
water, beahh-giving springs, and tbe
disease breeding stagnant kind found
in blackened pools.
Another kin I of water is the icy
cold brand, disbed out nude tbe
name of discouragement, ridicule aud
runs te Get Kirk.
