Coleman, while digging a well on his
placo on the East Fork, about thre'
miles from town, was surprised lo dis
cover particles of gold. Investigation
showed it existed in considerable
quantities, aud conditions indicated
that tho well, which is about thirty
feet down, is in an old river bed. Mr.
Coleman will dig another well near
tho present ono aud prospect further.
Mr. Williamson, Mr. Biggs and Dr,
Cnlsner are found guilty on their
third trial. They were charged with
subornation of perjury in orocnrinir
many persons to make false affidavits
for the purpose of taking up limbe
land claims in Crook County. Tho
lands were to bo transferred to them
ufterwards. Tho cliarges were true,
Thero never was a real doubt in any
one's mind that they wero true; but
there was a serious question as to
whether an Oregon jury could b
found that would convict. Two iuries
failed, because certain of their mem
)ers believed that the land laws were
mado to bo broken, or, if broken, that
the practice was universal, and tho
Government was making invidious
liscrimiuation when it singled out
these defendants for punishment.

ition. Why make an example of a
Representative in Congress, and his

vigorous and persistent prosecution
of Williamson, Biggs and Gesner.
They had broken the law. The testi
mony that they hail was abundant
and convincing. The Government
had it could have no prejudlco to
satisfy, no feeling of any kind, except
that it had a duty to perform, and
must perform it. S it has done.
The days of land grabbing iu Ore
gon and iu the Nation are over. The
days of retribution for the land grab
