EDITORIAL.
David B. Hill is dolibtpd by tho
nomination of Judge Parker, and
Cleveland is pleased, but Wall Street
is yet to be beard from. Then, after
tbe voters register their preference iu
November, we can judge of tho wis
dom of the choice.
Tbe Democrats have devised a po
litical platform without a financial
plank. It i6 just as well; platforms
are made to get into office on, but not
to do business upon. However, in
this case, it matters not, as Parker's
chances to room at the Wbito House
and fatten at tho Public crib are not
very bright, and any old plank will do
to meet defeat upon.
Who is ItcspoEiMible for Anar
chy iu Colorado?
Conclusion.
With threats of pistols and coils of
rope the regularly elected civil officers
pf the Cripple Creek district were
forced to rosiini, right after tho deed
was committed especially the coro
ner of Teller Couuty, who would have
held an iuquest upon tbe dynamite
outrage and who had already impau
ellfd a jury for that purpose. The
union hall and the contents of tho
four union co operative stores and tho
plaut of tho Victor lRecordr' have
beeu destroyed. Mines not connected
with these troubles have beeu shut
down because union labor was em
ployed in them, and tho men peace
fully working there were arrested and
imprisoned.
The climax of this unparalleled de
banch of lawlessness and outrage is
found in the action of two judges, one
a Ite publican, the other a Democrat,
sitting as the Stato Supreme Court,
(which is simply a part of the machin
ery of tha Smelter Trust), in declar
ing the suppression of the constitu
tion by Governor Peabody to bo legal,
thus legalizing anarcby in Colorado.
Iu spite of these facts, which are
indisputable, the shameless charge is
made that the Socialists are responsi
ble for the present situation in Colo
rado. The press dispatches and the
proclamation of Governor Peabody
aud Adjutant General Bell deejare
that Socialir-iu a:d the Socialist Par
y have produced the conditions which
uow shock the world.
Nothing is farther from tho truth.
Unfortunately for the working class,
the Socialist Party has little strength
in Colorado. Compared with other
states and relative to its population
aud the importance of its industries,
Colorado is one of tho weakest states
for Socialism. The vote of the Soci
alist party was only a little over 2,01)0
out of a total of 100,000 in the entire
nt ate in 10u3.
If the workingraen of Colorado had
been wise enough to elect at least a j
few Socialists to the Legislature at
the last elect icu, thee Socialists might
possibly have prevented the wholesale
corruption of their capitalistic col
leagues by the mine owners. Colora
do is reaping the whirlwind of capi
talism in busimsir. and of capitalistic
anarchism in public office. Tbe uuion
miners aud other union workingmen
of Colorado are reapiug tho harvest
of tLe seed they have sown when they
voted for the Kepubhcan and Demo
crats. Under the conditions here described
we ask, what is there in the word "le
gality"? Ir an armed mob of mine
owners and their assistants can com
pel officers who were regularly elected
to resign by putting a ropo around
their necks, if this kind of thing is
backed up by the governor and tho
militia, aud supported by theSupreme
Court, then "law and order" are out
of the question.
But is there qo balm in Gilead? Is
there no way to stop capitalist anar
chy in Colorado? Dare not the Pres
ident of the United States act? Can
not the courts of the United States in
terfere? Both interfered quickly
enough in 1894 during tho American
ltaihvay Union strike? when a few old
box cars were Fet on fire by the detec
lives of tho Railroad Managers' Asso
ciation why cannot tho President
aud the United Slates Courts do so
uoiv ?
Or are we tp go back to iiht prin
ciples"? Are wo to have a war again
for the preservation of the Uuiou?
Are tbe das of bloody Kansas to be
repeated iji Colorado? Are 1855 and
18G0-G5 to be repeated, only, instead
of the colored mau, the white man is
o 'e freed'
sii situation iu the Cripple Creek
district, mm u.e'Stute of Cluiutl in
geueial, contains a warning to uuiou
men and to all the woikingmen of
America. Tbey can see right uow,
iu the Cripple Creek district, what
will happen to tlem in every state of
tho JJpion if the capitalist class con
tinues to band together for the par
pose of taking away the constitutional
rights of the workers and catch them
unawares as in Colorado?
There is only one salvation. The
workers must soon seize the powers of
government by political action, and
establish a safer social order in every
state of the Union, mcluding Colora
do, or they will have to fight a mortal
combat, not oi.ly for their industrial
freedom, but also their political liber
ty and their civic rights.
Socialism stands for a new social
order aud the Socialist Party is tho
political organization demaudiug this
But the Socialists have regard for tho
laws, although they did not make
them. The Socialists obey tho laws,
although it is their intention to
chaugo most of them at tho first op
portunity. Socialism claims the full
value of tho product for the producer,
but Socialists will not blow up prop
erty with dynamite for that purpose.
Tho Socialists are revolutionary, but
their choseu weapons are tho consti
tutional guaranteed rights of free
speech, free preEH and tho ballot.
Thero can bo no peace umil wo
have industrial order, and we canuot
have industrial order until every man
gets the full value of his product. It
is fortuuato that the same ocouomic
causes which developed capitalism
and the trusts are leading to Sjcial
ism, which till abolish classes.
Tho ocouomic iuterests of tho capi
talist class dominate the eutire social
system, and the lives of the working
class are recklessly sacrificed for
profit. This is again proven in Colo
raiio. Tho active force in bringing
about a uew and higher order of soci
ety must be the working class. All
other classes are alike interested in
the upholding of thesvstemof esploi
tan m. as is shown in Colorado where
tLe saloan and dive keepers aud gam
blers join the Citizens' Alliance to
holp the Smelter Trust against the
working people.
lhe workers can most effect iveiv
act hs a class iu their struggle against
the united power of capitalism by
unitiug iu their own party, the So
cialist Party.
Workingmen of America, arouse!
Join the party of your class and save
freedom iu America ere it is too late!
Join the party of your class and help
to achieve freedom for 3011 r fellow
workers throughout the world!
Issued by Authority of the National
Committee of the Socialist party.
