Tnis age of the world ought to pro
duce thinkers, but instead, it is prob
ably thn greatest Hge of humbug that
has ever Iven known. Two groat po
litical purlins are in the fakir busi
ness, and besides this, there are fakirs
pa I ore on almost every proposition
that bobs qd for inspection. Tbe
cartoon profession is a fruitful field
of fakensm. One cartoonist will m-t-truct
with a picture of tho full dinner
pai!, and a second, with that of an
empty one; one teaches ou in glow
ing colors of prosperity, while another
brings 3-011 back to the emptiness of
dtlnsion, and between the lot the de
luded mind is apt to take on a belief
bf its own, havirg neither reason nor
stability behind it, but, as it were,
stranded on fallacy without the power.
to extnoate itself. Too often, because
of there and other causes, wo find
minds that have become stationery
because of haing formed a belief
without reaching out to comprehend
the priuciplqs involved, and nothing
short of a mental cyclone could move
that mind to investigate the premises.

Kail and Excursion.
Snnday was a day of excursions on
tbe river, aud Bandon came in for its
part. Besides that of the YV. O. W
going to Mrtle Point, which is spok
en of elsewhere, there were excursions
from Beaver Hill and Bivorton.
The steamers Favorite aud Dis
patch brought down a largo crowd
from Coquillo, Riverton and other
river points, and the Liberty was char
tered by the Beaver Hill crowd, so
that all the steamers were busy on
that day, aud a large number of visi
tors wero- in town.
In the afternoon there was a game
of baseball on the Bandun bnllgrounds
between tho Beaver Hill and Kiverton
teams, in which the score stood 10 to
10, in favor of the Iliverton nine, but
it was claimed that some tallies that
had been nnule by the Beaver Hill
boys, had not been tallied, and tha?
the game was ;ihnnt an even thing.

Did you over stop to think that God
hides away so mauysecre.ta under the
snows of winter? Who can tell what,
mysteries are buried beneath the
white cover, so deep, so dazzling in
its purity when it first falls on tbe
brown leaves and withered grass? It
is true to its trust and never whispers
of tbe possibilities that are being shel
tered nnd nourished by its enfolding.
The flowers are only Bleeping, thoir
tiny pulses aro throbbing with life
down in tho darknoss, and after they
awake, rested and refreshed, they will
bud and blossom more beautifully
than before.
The bare branches of the trees bend
lovingly down iu a feeble attempt to
protect the little sleeping blossoms,
and the wind, we say, sighs mournful
ly as it rocks them to aud fro, but it
is enly chanting a lullaby that is
known to uat tiro's children alone. All
is quiet and peaceful nuder tho snow
awaiting the sound of ''spring's trum
pet'' to awaken to a larger life and
greater loveliness. So when ''life's
winter is past" and the snow has
melted at the call of God's eternal
spring, what wonderful surprises await
U6. Life, full, free, throbbing life
that will nev.r need to sleep again
und.'r the winter's sorrow, for
"Behind the dim unknown
6tandeth Uod within the shadow, keeping
Watch above his uwu."
And what seemed death to the nat
ural sense was only a hiding away of
the germ immortal, with God standing
gnai d, ready to bring it forth in good
time. The king who comes and spread
his robe uf ermine over all, treads, oh
so gently, because of the sleeping
buds and tender blossoms beneath his
feel in their earthly cradle. The
awakening time is uot yet, aud the
will sleep more sweetly under th"
ermine rube. Vhy do we not think
of this when our hearts are heav
laden because of what has been hidden
away from us, remembering tint there
Mve Oue who never lost s sight of our
llowers. even though they wither here
in the coltl blasts I hat come from the
sea of pain and the valley of the
shadow. He knows they are only
resting for a moment, to come to a
more marvelous growth in the "ardent
that t:re ',ni-kiM'd eternallv, and
whose flowers know no winter linn
for sleep. The earth llowers coiin
back to us from under the winter's
snow nnd we are of more value than
I hey. The little birds that build thoit
homes in the heights, and hide iu the
clouds, come back when I bey hear of
the spring's new birth or resurrection
ami we are of more value than they
W e. too, will awaken from the sleep
that closes the weary eyes just long
enough for the angel in waiting to
bear us over the bar into tho eternal
.summer of that '-Morning Land," of
which it insaid, "aud there shall bono
night there," neither any snow or pit
iless rain is needed lo kill and make
alive. From the depths will come
forth the hidden treasures. Dead, we
said of them, but not so. Like a gen:
that refuses bTsparkle ia hidden fori
time from the light until it regains its
biillinncy. so our jewels have been
hidden from ns. to be given back per
fected in a setting that glows with
immortality, and our flowers will
bloom again when the angel's whisper
awakeus them to a vision of bkies
fairer than ours, breezes softer, and
sunshine that nover-is bidden. From
under the snow of earth iuto the eter
nal summer of heaven.
This is our springtime mossage io
you, and amid the sorrows of the days
last that siill bear heavy npon you,
may yon be led out from under the
shadow inio that glorious sunlight
and be so inspired with hope that sor
rowing and sighing shall flee; away.
and a quiet peace mantle your hori
zon, so calm and serene, thai perfect
W will come nnto you and forover
