The Other ttleve.
Dr. Adolf Lorenz, tbe famous sur
geon of Vienna, while addressing an
assembly of several hundred medical
men in Philadelphia, gave a bit of in
teresting autobiography, aa follows:
“Forty-four years ago I waa a little
and very poor boy. One day, wander
ing along tbe street, I found a single
glove. I pot it ou. It was much too
large, and contrasted harshly with my
feet, which were bare. Prond and
happy I walked to my home, and
showed my treasure to my mother.
‘My dear boy,' she said, ‘yon will have
to work very bard to find tbe other
glove.’ In tbe many hardships of
later life I often remembered tbe sig
nificance of these words. But, at the
age of thirty, after maoy struggles,
I had overcome all obstacles as a
student, and arose to be first assistant
to tbe late Professor Albert. I taught
general aurgery, and tbe dream of my
life was to become a famous surgeon
—to rummage in tbe interiors of fel
low-mortals. But tbe dream never
came true. I contracted a peculiar
form of eczema. I could not follow
my chosen work. I thought that tbe
other glove was gone forever, and I
could .scarcely resist tbe temptation
to blow out my brains. In complain
ing of my lot to Professor Albert, he
aaid to me: ‘If you can't get along
with wet aurgery, try dry surgery.’
So it was not by love, but by necessi
ty,{that I became a dry surgeon. But
necessity ia tbe mother of invention,
and after twenty years of bard work
I found, at last, theotber glove. And
it baa brought me the esteem and ap
preciation of the profession, and tbe
grateful thanks of many a mother.'’
There are men in every trade aud
profession who aiesearching alter the
other glove, but Lave not yet found it.
This may be because they are misfits
iu tbe world, aod are joined to an oc
oupation for which they have no taste
or ability. Ability, however, is not
always a natural gift, but is more
likely to be the result of concentre'ad
effort and determination. Paul’s apt
phrase is tbe secret of success in every
spbere: “Thie one thing Ido." There
are carpenters who ought to be minis
ters. and lawyers who should be stone
masons, and in every walk of life
there are men wedded to some busi
ness in which they will never succeed.
You may have seen men in a profes
sion for which they bad no liking,
and yet because they threw themselves
with a divine frenzy into it they be
came masters and wou fame. Mat ion
Sims, the great physician, loft written
an autobiography which is full of in
struction. He was driven into medi
cine without any love for the profes
sion, aud after five years qt successful
practice be was on tbe point of aban
doning it to become a dealer in ready
made clothing.
For ten years he
purposely avoided tbe class of cases
which afterward made him fatuous.
He seems to have been forced against
bis will into all bis peculiar successes-
