In a conversation with Elbert Dyer
one day thia week, be gave out tbe
following experience be bad in clear
ing an acre of land, planting, culti
vating, and harvesting th* crop.
The spot cleared was at hia mill
aom* three or four miles aonth of
town, ia situated on the huckleberry
fiat, and ia not considered a flrssvclass
article of land by any means, but
atill it appear* to have some fertility
about it according to report.
The land, while not the worst to
alesr and get nnder a state of oalti-
yation, coat fifty dollar* to get ready
for tba plow. Then eaaae tbe plow
ing, seeding, cultivating sod harvest
ing, which cost thirty dollars more,
making eighty dollars expended in
clearing and raising tbe crop.
Tb* acre of land waa planted in po
lotoe*, and th* crop when harvested
waa worth aeventy-fiv* dollar*, which
gave a return ot all tbe money ex
pended on the lot, except five dollars.
If next year's crop is of equal value
to tb* on* raised this year, tbe land
will hav* paid fur steering, seeding
and cultivating, in two yoam, besides
giving a profit above all expense, of

i It pays to ckrar up land, and great
improvement can be mad* in thia
county by getting the land in condi
tion to yield its increase. Stock pays
well, and there ia no country better
adapted to dairying tban the coast
