The hutcroobile is the playthiDg of
the wealthy class—Well, let them
have it—Dissipation was giving a
good many of them au early paaaport
into the world beyond, but the auto
has accelerated the speed at which
they pass out. The Dext “crying

atop the destruction of millionaires.
The department store is to have sn
ot her boom. A New Jersey corpor
ation with a capital stock of *5,000,-
000 has been incorporated to buy up
stores and combine them into depart-
iuslitutions. The middle men must
finully get out of the way. There is
no place for them in our present sys
tem. The employer with enormous
wealth, on one side and the employed
on the other, is what oompetition is

The Thing* He Lost.
Tbe following speech, which ia
quoted iu Weapon» for Temperance
Warfare, was made by a reformed
drunkard at a temperance meeting:
“I have been thinking since I came
into tbe meeting tonight about tbe
losses I have met with since I signed
the pledge. I tell you there is uot s
man in tbe society that has lost more
by «topping drink than I have. Wait
a bit until I tell you what I mean.
There was a nice job of work to be
done in tbe shop today, and tbe boss
called for me. ‘Give it to Law,' says
be; ‘he’s the beat man in tbe shop.’
“ Well, I told my wife at supper
time, and she says, ‘Why, Lawrie, be
used to call you tbe worst! You’ve
lost your bad name, haven't you?’
“ 'That’s a fact, wife,’ says I, ‘and
it ain’t all I've lost in the last six
moDlbs, either. I bad poverty snd
wretchedness, and I've lost them. I
had an old ragged coat and a shock
in’ bad hat, and some water proof
boots that let tbe waler out at the
toes as fast as it went in at. the beek.
I've lost them. I bad a red face and
a trembling band, and a pair of shaky
legs that gave me an awful tumble
now and then. I had a habit of curs
ing and swearing, and I've got rid of
that. I bad an aching head and a
heavy heart, and, worse than all the
rest, a guilty conscience. I thank
God I've lost them all.’
“Then I told my wife what she bad
lost. ‘You bad an old ragged gown,
Mary,’ says I, ‘and you bad trouble
and sorrow, and a poor wretched
borne and plenty of heartache*, fur
you bad a miaerable drunkurd for a
husband. Mary! Mary! thank tbe
Lord fur all that you and I have lust
since I signed the Good Samaritan
Pledge’!”—Ex.
Waiting for the Eurtliqnake.
Judging from tbe contentment
which some Christian» seem to mam
fest, the following litlle incident illus
trates their attitude toward cburch
work. They, too, are “waiting for an
earthquake,” instead of digging po
tatoes for themselves and the hungry
ones about them.
A traveler in Georgia met a genial-
looking old fellow sitting astride a
fence, and ihuugbtfully smoking. He
gave greeting: “Good-morning!’’
•‘ 'Mawning, stranger!’
“How’s times?” asked tbe traveler.
“Put tee tul able, stranger. Had
some trees to cut down. Cyclone
came ’Jong an’ leveled 'em for me.”
“Well, that was good!” commented
the stranger.
“Yes—guess
'twas.
Lightning
'totber night set fire to the brush, an
saved me the trouble of burnin’ it.”
“Remarkable! Work all done then,
eb?”
“Not yet. stranger. Waiting now
for an earthquake to come 'long an’
shake tbe taters out of the ground.”
