Cheater (Pa.) Democrat: General
Miles’ report on conditions in the
Philippines, with special reference to
alleged cruelty on the part of officers
and men of the American army to

fully corroborates tbe accusations
made by returned soldiers and the

Such things are astounding, yet it is
only just that tbe truth should be

the waters of a mighty flood, Pacolet
8. C„ has been swept from tba map
and tbe great cotton mills of Spartan
burg and Clifton, 8. C„ have been
wiped out by a storm which struck
this part of tbe oountry late last
night.
Up to tbe present hour it baa been
impossible lo ascertain tbe loss of life.
Six bodies base already been seen
drifting down tbe stream. It is pos
sible that many workers in tbe mills
base gone down before tbe current.
Pacolet and Clifton are situated io
I be defiles of two valleys, between
lofty ranges of bills. Most of tbe
homes of tbe workmen are located in
the valley near tbe mills in which
they are laborers.
Tbe shadow of tbe storm settled
over Spartanburg last night. It gath
ered f rce until tbe proportions of a
giant cloudburst were reached, when
i he downpour from the clouds swept
Hwsy the dame, which in turn settled
into <>ue vast swirling stream which
ruebed down tbe valley where the
mills are situated. At this hour (6-01
P. M) the waters are roaring abovo
booses aud homes, where yesterday
the spindle and tbe loom were at
work aud a thousaud laborers were
busy. It is estimated that the prop
erty loan will reach 12,000,000,
At Pacolet tbe following damage
has been reported: Mill No. 1 has
been washed away completely t mill
No. 2 is totally destroyed. Tbe dams
of three mills are swept away; tbe
warebonse of mill Na 1, with its total
stock of goods and cotton, was swept
away, while tbe hotel, tbe leading
cbnrcbes and almost every building
i n tbe little city has been partially or
wholly destroyed.
Mill No. 3 at Pacolet baa been de
stroyed and Clifton mill Na 1 and
tbe Glendale at Clifton are reported
to be totally rained* Wire communi
cation with that section ia interrupted.
Victor Montgomery is the owner of
the Pacolet mills at Spartanburg and
that at New Holland. Ga., which was
so seriously crippled by tbe tornado
near Gainsville last Monday.
