According to one press dispatch
with reference to the Littlefield anti
trust bil), it provides that it shall ap
ply oply to ''corporations hereafter
organised,4 Wbat bettor thing than
thio could the trusts want? All they
have to do is to get together and
“merge“ before tbe President signs
tbe law. Tbe whole thing looks like
a farce—or like chaff thrown ioto ths
people’s eyes. Littlefield's talk may
be taken aa expressing tbe extreme
anti trust sentiment, so far as tbe
Republican party ia concerned. And
be justified trusts. He said in effect
that we inherited them, and conld not
get rid of them. His whole speech ia
an argument or an apology for the
things that are, as against tbe things
that should be. He was a man whom
tbe people much depended upon, but
tn whom, like so many others, they
are somewhat disappointed. He said
there were trusts in England centnrisa
ago. Being a scholar, be showed that
there was a trnat 23(0 years before
Christ. Very true. We admire your
scholarship, Mr. Littlefield; it shines
somewhat; but wbat has that got to
do with preset conditions in tbe
United States of America in tbe year
1903? What has all this learning to
do with
Vampire Rockefeller?
Gorgon Morgan ?
With tbe murdering coal trnat?
With the starving beef trust?
Because there waa something sim
ilar 2300 years before Christ, shall we
therefore submit to be plundered by
processes of law? Because a thing is
5000 years old, ia it therefore right or
irrestible? or unrefortnable? And
because there was an iniquity in the
earth 2300 years before Christ, did
the people elect yon to defend it ?
Mr. Littlefield’s speech, if it means
anything, means that these astonish
ing and alarming inequalities are
merely inevitable, inexorable, natural,
not to be avoided or controlled—like
tbe sunshine and the tides, tbe mur
muring of water and the whispering
of winds. You only need to make
another speech to show that trusts
were invented in high heaven, and
are a gift of the great and gracious
God, to whom we all reverently,
humbly and, and devoutly bow.
But there’s Rockefellef
And there’s Morgan.
And there’s Carnegie.
Now tbe American people dot’t
blame a man for succeeding, nor for
getting rich. A thoughtful local
preacher, Dr Creeeey, aaid that very
nicely last Sunday. But he only said
it incidentally in developing a sermon
on a text: “Whatsoever a man sowelb,
that shall be also reap.“ No, we
Americana like men wbo succeed.
We applaud tbe man wbo succeeds,
and properly, rightly. But we do
object, and have a right to object, to
laws, to legislators, to authorities,
helping men to succeed by taking
dimes and dollars from tbe multitude
and pouring them into the pouches
of a few men.
Now thia ia exactly what tbe ma
jority of Congress has been doing for
forty years. When tbe Democrats
had a chance they did tbe same—and
even worse, because they not only lied
to the people about what they would
do if they had a chance, but they
proved, as they bad ou many previons
occasions, that they were utterly in
capable of doing business at all—
and that, at least, tbe Republican
party can do, and baa done, always.
No, Mr. Littlefield; because there
waa a trust 2300 years before Christ
is not a sufficient excuse for tbe ex
istence of
Gourmand Rockefeller, and
Gorgon Morgan.
Unless you do something besides
quoting ancient history, the country,
by 1908, will elect
A Socialist for President.

A court was bearing a case of
“drunk, third arrest.“ The judge
turned to th® womau who stood near,
whose worn sorrowful face bad
touched bis heart, and said:
“I atp sorry, but I must lock np
your husband.“
The injured wife, victim of the
legalized liquor trafie, ono of the
many who “take the consequence
while the husband takes the drink,“
bad no thought of touching deep
moral or economic problem«, but only
of plain, every day common sense
when she replied:
“Your honor, wouldn't it be better
for me and the children if you locked
up (he saloon, aud let my bnsbaml go
to work?“
A Jadg -'a Indictment.
If any class of citizens has opp<>r
tnnity to measure tbe havoc winch
tbe rum trafie brings to acotnuniuity,
that class is composed of our judges
and lawyers. From tbe bench have
come some burning iudictmeals of
tbe liquor oligaicby.
The one we herewith quote is from
Judge G. W. Herdman of Jerseyville,
III. He says: “During fifteen years
on tbe bench, I observed that one half
of tbe crime committed, and one half
tbe causes for divorce, were Irnceuble
to tbe drinking of intoxicating liquors
Tbe drinking of intoxicating liquors
has increased all manner of crime
it begets crime. It has increased di
vorce litigation—it begets divorcee.
It has increased the number of in
mates in our almshouses—it begets
paupers. It has crowded tbe state
asylnm for feeble minded children
aud idiots—it iR-gets idiots Rud feeble
minded children. It has overcrowded
our asylums for the insane—it beg.-ts
jOsnnity. It is increasing tbe burdens
of government, federal, at ate, conuty,
and municipal, at a fearful rate, aud
demands tbe most heroic treatment
to rid us of its baleful presence and
baneful effects.“
True, Judge Herdtnan, every word
true. Is it not about time that tbe
American people were waking up to
tbe unspeakable peril of the situation?
N«t Ram In the Army.
The great railroads of the country
will not allow their employes to drink
liquor while on dnty. Some of them
prohibit the men from drinking even
while they are off duty.
That is right.
Many of our large manufacturing
and merchantile houses will not em
ploy a man who is intemperate, and
are coming to insist more -ind more
upon to'al absliuence.
But the war department of the
United States makes uo such demand
of the bqys who enlist in its service
If practical temperance is good for a
railroad employe or a uierchaotile
clerk, why is it not good for a United
States soldier? Or, if the practice of
temperate habits works to the advnu
I age of a railroad corporation or a
business house, why would it not
work to the advantage of the Ameri
can army? The claims by officers of
the war department that our soldiers
must bare grog, is a disgrace to them
selves, to the army, and to the nation
which snpporta it.
If tbs present army cannot gel
along without rum-drinking, and all
aorta of revelry and debauchery, turn
the drunkards out. and fill op the
rank« with clean yaang fellow« wbc
are masters of themselves, aod not
the slaves of a vicious and disgusting
habit.— Epworth Herald.
