EDITORIAL.
Spain’s boy King wants to marry a
Sooth American heiress. Here is a
chance for some of the wealthy Amer
ican title banters. A few million dol
lars, dexterously displayed before the
pyes of the young monarch will so
dazzle them that be will be unable to
tell the difference between a Spanish
señorita and an Americam girl.
The Spanish nobility is having pal
pitation of the heart over the ec
centricities of their boy king. King
Alphonse is but 16 years old and his
subjects are at a loss to know whether
be is crazy, eccentric, or just having
a bushel of fun at the expense of tbe
dignitaries. Well it serves them
about right. They have no business
to put a child on tbe throne to rule
them. Tbe mind even of kings must
have time to mature.
Frank Andrews, of Detroit, Mich.,
who was on trial for wrecking tbe
bank of which he was president, was
sentenced to fifteen years at hard
labor, but two days later was released
from custody op a writ of error. Bank
Wreckers are a slippery class; with
this particular one, it was “presto
change.“ He got into prison on error
and escaped on error, but tjiere is no
error in the loss of his victims; it is a
cold, bard fact with no change busi
ness about it.
Mark Hanna is credited with the
paying “that the labor troubles should
be settled by an appeal to tbe bead
and heart.“ Mark ie a wiseacre in
bis way. He knows that corporations
have no souls, hence no “hearts,“ and
that tbe “beads“ can never be found,
consequently there is nothing to ap
peal to, in which case all concessions
must be made on the part of tbe
strikers who have both beads and
liearts and are very frequently bur
dened with unsatisfied stomachs to
boot,

Kliow Event of the Year.
Big Celebration Day« Set for the Portland
l£]k«' Carnival, September 1—18.
Tbe event of tbe year in tbe Pacific
Northwest in the exposition line is
coming off at Portland, September 1
to 13, when the Portland Elks’ Carni
val will be giyen. This street fair is
on a larger scale than anything of tbe
kind attempted in this part of tbe
country. Besides being a sort of
Autumn festival, tbe exposition will
be replete with a series of shows in
connection therewith, tbe like of
which bas not been on this Coast be
fore. Every railway aud steamer line
throughout Oregon, Washington, Ida
ho, Montana aud British Columbia,
realizing tbe importance and tbe ex
tent of the affair, has made especial
low rates to indnee travel Portlaud
ward during the run of tbe Carnivni.
Tbe Jabour Oriental Circus and
Menagerie bas been secured for tbe
Carnival, This aggregation comes
from New York City with 160 people,
50 cages of animals, ponies, doge, etc.,
and 14 Midway shows, together with
a sprinkling of people of all nations
to give the daily pageants that flavor
ing of Oriental gaiety which tbe pub
lic demands and seems to enjoy with
increasing fondness from year toyear.
A glittering array of special features
and attractions bas been prepared.
The arts and industries of the great
Northwest will receive full attention.
Elks’ day will see delegations of tbe
B. P. O. E. from; all parts of tbe
country. A tramload of the Elks is
coming from Texas to participate in
tho grand parade, which will be a
contest among al) lodges of the prin
cipal Coast cities, for prizes aggre
gating $1000. Tbe day of tbe open
ing, Labor day, organized labor will
have a grand demonstration in con
nection with tbe Carnival. Nearly
every day of tbe two weeks’ run of
the Fall Curnival bas been set for
special celebrations. Owing to tbe
exceedingly low rates announced, it
is believed tbe general attendance
will be large, as interest is widespread
in the big show.

Gather- Them Into
Drunkards Hell,
a
All alone in bis ber, counting over his gold,
Sat a licensed rnm-seller, hard hearted and
cold;
Though his day's work was done, still be
lingered late,
Like a goblin appearing, a phantom of fate.
A worker of infamous evil was be.
With a soul that was black as a night storm
at sea;
And these words of doom from a liquor
flend fell;
“Ho! I gather them into a drunkards' hell.
“Yes, I gather them in from the Church and
tbe State,
From the high and the low, from the riob
and tbe great.
It is known to the pastor my pew rent is
paid,
And the votes I control make the statesmen
afraid;
So my crimes they oondoue, and with smil
ing they come
For a share of the gold that I make by my
rum.
Yea, I’ve brought them securely all undor
my spell.
And I’ll gather them into a drunkards’ hell.
“Yes, I gather them in,—men, women, and
boys,—
Scores of thousands each year my poison
destroys,
Both the body and soul, the wide world
around,
From the homes where the bliss of sweet
joys should abound.
Dearest mother, fair daughter, kind father,
and eon,
How I acet ter their idols and hopes one by
one!
With my license to kill it is known full well
How I gather them into a drunkards' bell,
‘Yes, I gather them iu from the gay festal
board,
From the banqueting-hall where tho red
wine is poured,
From the gay social glass on tbe bright
New Year's morn,
From tbe young father's home where the
new babe is born;
From tbe glories of fame they excitingly
prize,
From the chamber of death whero the dear
est one dies,
From the fair marriage-feast, and the funer
al knell,—
All uro gathered alike to the drunkard's hell
'Yes, I gather them tn from the doctor who
deals
Alcohol to his patient, assuming it heals.
While the deadly nostrum benumbs the
poor brain,
and brings on delusions with many a pain.
Though the poison may lull and appear to
give ease.
While the 'gold cure is proof it produces
disease,
And nostrums all fail to make sick men
get well.—
Still I gather them into a drunkards’ hell.
“Yes, I gather them in. Hear their wild
shrieks aud groans!
Helpless women are praying in hei.rt-lr.aL-
ing tones.
While their children beg.bread in tbe piti
less cold,
Still I rule them as king and my rum sce;-
ter hold.
Though my victims are many yet hell
claims them all,
Whether coming from palaeo, from hoyel
or hall.
Both by night and by day all my reoords
do tell.
How I gather them iuto a dru kards’ hell.
“Yes, 1 gather them in by extending my
trade,
For my dealiug near doubles each passing
decade;
Aud Congress stands by me and fosters the
sale
Of the devil’s best aids, lager beer and
cieam ale;
But the pride of my life and the joy of my
heart
Is to And Christian voters are taking my
part,
And ship rum to the heathen, with Bibles to
sell.
While I gather them into a drunkards’ bell.
“Yes. I gather them in, without hope or
release,
Where the pangs of their torments will ever
increase.”
A long line ot goblins, a dark, ghastly train,
Made of rum-mined wretches all writhing
iu pain.
Bushing on madly, gnashing teeth as they
told,
With the wails of tbe damned how tbe liquor
fiend sold
Them the liquor of death he was lioensed to
sell,
And gathered them into a drunkards’ hell.
Would yon gather them iu from the dram-
driuker’s doom,
From an uuending death, from a dark, liv
ing tomb?
Would you help bleak the shackles and set
captives free
From the poisoning ourse of tbe dark upas-
tree?
Would you strike down tbe foe that is
blighting the laud,
Aud orowu our nation, most noble and
grand?
Theu vote as you pray, for no rum fiend
to sell
That which gathers men into a druukard’s

thank* to your freatnicut I will now give you
a full history of my case, to be uaed at your discretion.
About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost
my hearing in this ear entirely
I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three month- without ftny success, consulted a num
ber of physicians, among other«», the mo 4 eminent ear apt-ci »list of this city, who (old me that
only an operation could help me. nml even that only temporarily, that the head noise« would
then cease, but the hearing in the affe< tvi « ar would be 1 1» forever.
I then saw your advertisement accidcn ally in a New York paper, and oraereu your treat
ment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noise«ct ased. and
to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the <li«eased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you
heartily and beg to remain
Very truly vours.
