EDITORIAL.
Is it the great state of Oregon that
¡e quibbling over a technicality in re
gard to paying the reward for the re
turn of Merrill’s body, or is it some
narrow minded official that brings a
stain of dishonor upon tho status’s
fair name?
Now that Jeflries, the prize fighter
has done Fitzsimmons to a finish, be
Blight turn his attention to Tracy. If
be can induce the champion of the
Northwest to meet him in the ring, it
will prove a drawing card and give
him the greatest notoriety of his life.
Hal, the Healer has been exhibit
ing here daring the past ten days,

this company puts up a very good
one, but if their jokes were less sug
gestive of nudity and the indecent
they would be worthy of a better rec
ommendation to the public.
The Portland Journal has changed
hands and is now under the manage
ment of C. S. Jackson, and old news
paper man formerly from the East.
The Journal is becoming an excellent
newspaper and will fill a long felt
want. Oregon needs a good inde
pendent daily paper in opposition to
the Oregonian. The R ecorder wishes
the Journal success.
Now we are told that the British
House of Commons gave J. Pierpont
Morgan a dinner the other day.
Great Scott ¡that’s nothing; the Amer
can people have given him many din
ners and millions of dollars. He usu.
ally gets what he wants, and if En
gland is let off with a dinner she is
in luck. Morgan exerts a power great
er than that of any other living man,
and he may conclude that he wants
coronation honors yet.
Portland merchants are up against
the salt trust. They imported 9,000
tons of salt from England to avoid
the tax laid upon that commodity by
the trust, but the trust is enteitaming
them with a §14 drop in the price per
ton. This procedure will knock the
bottom out of their profit, besides
causing a loss to the merchants on
salt on hand. In these days of
trusts merchants do not purchase
where they please. They buy trust
articles or the trust proceeds to im
poverish them. Under a perfect So
cialist system Buch iniquity cannot
flourish. Tho Salt trust is an edu
cator. Do you prefer to be forced to
do as greedy monopolists dictate, or
would vou prefer to force greedy
mendicants to be just. If the latter,
then got into the Socialist band wagon
without delay. The Apostlo Paul
said to search all things and bold fast
to that which is good. This is cer
tainly good advice and while you are
searching take an unbiased look at
Socialism and see if it isn’t worth
hanging on to.

Civil
Service
Examinntion
The U. S. Civil Service Commission
will hold examinations, during Sep
tember and October, in several places
in each state to secure young men
and women for the government ser
vice. There are now 126,423 positions
in the classified civil service, being
an increase of 40,736 in six years.
There were 7,972 persons appointed
between July 1, 1901, and April 15,
1902, being at the rate of 10,070 for
the year. There will probably bo 11,-
000 appointments next year. Salaries
at appointment vary from §660 to
§1,200 a year with liberal promotions
afterward. All appointments are for
life and for most positions only a
common school education is required.
Politics or religion is not considered.
Those desiring to take examinations
of this kimi can get full information
about them free by writing to the
Columbian Correspondence College,
Washington, D. C., and for its Civil
Service Catalogue for 1902.

pie of Ohio and Illinois. Iu popula
tion, indeed, the latter states far out
strip her.
Population of Maine 661,086.
Population of Ohio, 3,672.316.
Population of Illinois, 3,826.351.
That is, Ohio has five and a half
times and Illinois five and four fifths
times the inhabitants of Maine, Never
theloss, Maine has far more saving^
bank deposits than either.
Savings bank deposits of Maine,
§53,397,590.
Savings bank deposits of Ohio, §34,-
606,213.
Savings bank deposits of Illinois
§23,498,504.
Thus, though less than one-fifth in
number, the people ¡ d Maine have
more than half again, as much laid
lip in the savings batiks as the people
in Ohio; and though little more than
one sixth in number, they far exceed
twice tho deposits of the people of
Illinois. Or, to put the same facts in
a different form, were the amounts
deposited in the savings banks of
Illinois divided equally among all the
people of the state each person would
receive but §6.14; by a similar divi
sion of the savings of Ohio among
her people, each person would re
ceive §9.42. But each inhabitant of
the state of Maine would carry away
§80.77 wore each to receive an equal
share of her deposits.
Less than a thirteenth per capita
in Illinois, and less than an eighth in
Ohio of tho per capita savings in
Maine. Pity “way down East” if you
will, because the open saloon does
not invite the workingmen to spend
their wages for drink. Takeone moro
fact into consideration, that while
twenty nine states are more populous
than Maine, only seven surpass bet
in the aggregate of saving batik de
posits, and then decide whether the
licensed saloon is friendly or opposed
to the financial prosperity of thoso
who work for their living.

one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall’s Catarrh Cure
is tho only positive cure known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a con

surfaces of the system, thereby
destroying tbo foundation of the
disease, and giving the patient
strength by building up tbeoonstitn
