EDITORIAL.
It cost Englund about one billion
two hundred and fifty million dollars
to conquer the Boers, without esti
mating the cost in lives sacrificed in
the struggle.
Governor Geer is the legitimate
Ilepublican candidate for senator ac
cording to the initiative vote received
in the state election and should have
the support of his party, however
there is a great effort being put forth
by certain Republican journals to
prove that the vote in this instance is
not binding
People who are not
willing to submit to the will of the
majority are called anarchists.
The House killed the Pacific Cable
bill. You can trust congress to do
nothing in the interest of the people.
Private capital has offered to build
the Pacific cable and congress prefers
that tribute should be levied by capi
tal rather than that the people should
send their messages at a cost which
would merely repay the government
for constructing and maintaining the
line. Capitalists do not want the
government to own an institution of
thia kind. The contrast would be too
great, and government ownership, or
Socialism, would be given too great
an incentive. Congress works for
the trusts and does not care for the
interests of the common people. Con
gress serves mammon.
And now comes the news that con
gress will not give Cuba reciprocity.
The Republicans nre in the majority
and the reason for denying Cuba re
lief is summed up in the statement
that if the Republicans grant thisap
peal of the Cubans, it will give the
Democrats an issue in the coming
campaign, hence, this attempt to
smother Democratic thunder. Great
Scott! think of it! ten million full
Hedged, voting Democrats, and all
too ignorant to find a campaign issue
iu case the Republicans don’t choose
to hand one out made to order. Is it
any wonder that the trusts are gather
ing in the WPidthof the country? How
ever, if nothing better offers out of a
rotting, expiring. competitive system,
the twain can easily pass through
another campaign in wrangling over
“high tariff, low tariff and tariff re
form.”
Denmark is Granted A Year
In Which to Ratify Danish
Wrst ladies Treaty.
W ashington , June 12.—The Senate
committee on foreign relations has
decided to recommend to the Senate
the ratification of the protocol exteud
ing for one year the time of the rati
fication of the Danish treaty for the
purchase of the Danish West Indies.
This measure is made necessary by
the failure of the Danish Parliament
to act upon the treaty. Senator Cul
lom reported the resolution of exten
sion to the Senate in executive session
aud asked that it be considered, but
Senator Hale objected aud under the
rules it went over.

only an operation could help me. and even that only tern nor <: ily, that the he ad noise® would
then cease, but the hearing in the affected eHr would be lost forever.
I then saw your advertisement acctden ally 1:1 a New ^ork paper, aud ordered your treat
