Advocates of the competitive system
are begiuing to use their old lash to
retard the growth of Socialism and
to keep their weak kneed followers
in line. This lash is ridicule It is
the argument of fools who are unable
to meet issues aud overt brow them
by reason, and can effect but the weak
and foolish. Tho intelligent, honest
person, who knows that a thing is
right, does that thing because it is
right regardless of ridicule.
The term “between the devil and
the deep sea“ is sometimes quoted as
representative of an existing condi
tion, or one purposed, aud the term
might be applied to those who are
lighting Socialism, as taught and
urged upon tLe basis of right aud
equitable conditions, yet who are
aiding aud abetting Trust Socialism
by upholding conditions which make
it possible for large concretions of
capital to overcome competition and
Nourish at the expense of tho geueral
public which constitute, by far, the
greater part of humanity. This class
stands between tho two forces, aud
aids in its own enslavement, while its
true frieuds battle for perfect liberty.
The partisan Democrat or Republi
can tells the Socialist that he will
throw his vote away as the Socialist
party has Dot the ghost of a chance
to wiu with u singlecandidate. Well!
tpat is peofound reasoning. When
did a mau ever attain that which be
wanted by working for that which he
did not want? Now comes the ques
tion: Can a man throw bis vote away
in voting his principles? The an
swer is no. He bus been true to him
self, true to what be has advocated,
and st an da blameless before any
judge, while on tho other hand, if he
has voted fur something be does nut
want, ho cannot respect himself, uor
does bo deserve the respect ami con
fidence of his follow man. Voting
for gratitude, when your judgment
says do , is out raging your conscience
and weakening your ability to with
stand wrong. Did Wendell Phillips
throw away bis influence when he
talked to almost deaf cars about tho
enormity of chattel slavery thirty odd
years prior to Lincolus Emancipation

Is self-government right? If so,
the referendum and initiative follows.
Direct legislation means simply an
actual instead of a mere theoretic
sovereignty of the people. We u»e
governed today, not by a democracy,
but by an elective aristocracy bolding
for a term. The people are sovereign
only at the moment of election—the
men they el» ct become their masters
for oue, two, four, or six years, as the
case may be. Self-government is one
thing—the choosing of the men who
are to govern you is n different thing.
A child may choose its guardian; a
slave might be given a voice in the
selection of his master and yet be ab
solutely subject to his domiuiou after
the choice were made.
Power will be used in the interests
of its possessor. If tlie power of gov
(lnment is to be used in the interests
of the people they must haze contin
uous and effective possession of the
government. We call our legislators
‘■agents’’ and the people their "prin
cipal”—queer agents who can give
away their principal's property de
spite his protest, and aro not respou
bible to him during their term of ser
vice; queer principal that cannot veto
his “agents’” plans, no matter how
much he objects to them, nor instruct
bis agents what to do whenever be
sees lit, nor discharge said agents
when they refuse to carry out his or
ders; queer principals who has to
obey tin» commands of his “agents”
instead of giving them orders.- Ejr.

BETTER TH AN PILLS.
The question has been asked. "In
what way are Chamberlain’s Stomach
& Liver Tablets superior to pills?”
Our answer is: They aro easier and
more pleasant to take, more mild ami
gentle in effect anil more reliable as
they can always be depeuded upon.
Then they cleanse and invigorate th»»
stomach aud leave the stomach* aud
bowels in a natural condition, while
pills nre more harsh in effect and their
use is often followed by constipation.

Just get ready to vote for direct
legislation. It doesn’t matter what
party supported the measure in the
legislature, and it doesn’t matter who
introduced it. Here is a chance for
you to vote your own citizenship into
power, and you are certainly misguid
ed if yon loose the opportunity to
give yourself the greatest constitu
tional right- that of being a force in
the Jaw making department of the
state. Never mind what the politico!
bosses say—just vote yourself the
right to have something to say about
laws under which you must live.—
