THURSDAY. APRIL .7. IS02-
EDITORIAL.
Socialism realized will bring a de
gree of prosperity and secusity to a
nation which no other form of govern
went can produce.
From tho charges that are coming
up in regard to the purchase of the
Danish West Indies it would appear
that not nil the rogues are in jail yet,
but that some of them are in COD
gross.
Socialism is easily understood and
must obtain in tho perfection of gov
eminent., but most persons have been
chasing the rainbow of hope so long
under the competitive system, to find
the mythical pot of gold, that they
have had no time to look around to
see where their interests lie.
Men who go to work with dull tools
when they have every facility with
which to sharpen them are considered
fools. What m >re caD be said of boys,
girl«, men or women who drift along
with tho correct of humanity, aud
fail to use their mental powers to elo
vate them into a higher sphere of lite
where they become wise and honored.
For what is your mind given to
yon? To think. For what was the
power to reason given? To make
decision. Then in the happy use of
these gifts it is our privilege to debate
all propositions from the highest
source of information available and
make our decisions according to our
best judgment of what will provebesl
in the end. He who does Jess than
this fails to use Lis God given talents
and fails in bis duty.
Now comes the information that
thro ugh protection many manufac
turers lire receiving benefits that they
do not nor never did need. This is
what is called obtaining money under
false pretense, and were the criminals
.common individuals there would be
an inquiry instigated, but as it is,
this kind of theft takes on a partisan
pature, and is abetted by a horde of
piesons who seem to live on a delu
sion that some how or other their
ship will sail into harbor seme bright
day in the future.
Another investigation will ba made
in congress. Denmark’s agent, in
the Danish West India transaction,
says be bad to use §500,000 to buy
congressman in accomplishing the
sale of tin property to the United
States, and the chargeas brought
up in congress charges is that parties
were bribed to help make the sale.
It is to be hoped that there is no
ground for the ci>mge, yet it is but
a natural conn qiivt.ee of a system
wherein men’s ; ersoiini interests out
weigh their collective interests. If
social interests were equal there would
be no car..to accept a I ribc, but
where a; qr.ibii ion. of property for
self, is the first consideration, it re
quires a man of sterling character to
withstand the temptation to gain by
the acceptance of a bribe.
Portland Telegram: The gang of
looters of the Cubau postal funds
have been properly convicted and
sentenced at last. Neeley gets ten
years’impri-onmeut and is fined §56,
701; Estes and Rathbone - the latter
ti pet worker for Senator Hanna—are
sentenced to ten years and lines of
over §35,000 each. Now let these
sentences be promptly aud surely ex
ecuted, and no pardons granted, and
other trusted public servants will be
careful bow they bundle public meu
eys.

Hon. David B. Henderaon, now
speaker of (lie House of Ropresontu-
tivts, when he was chairman of tl.e
Judiciary Committee, declared in fa
vor of Hie principle of Initiative aud
Referendum, as follows;
‘•It would be a great advantage to1
a pulilie man if expressions ou meas
nres could lie hud from the people,
and in a general way 1 can say, with
out hesitation, that any plan which
will enable the people Io know what
they are thinking; in other words, to
let A know what B, C and D believe
cannot do otherwise than good, and
above al), an intelligent expression of
the mass of the voters ou any and all
leading questions would be of great
value to public servants. Ou these
two leading propositions— an untrain-
meled ballot and the free, intellignt
expression of the people I will ever
lie found favoring both, ami can be
so quoted. Whatever is done should
permit the fullest discussion before
the vole is taken, so that the citizens
may compare notes fully and the
questions discussed may enter into
the campaigns among the people.”

BETTER THAN PILLS.
The following recipe is from the
Scientific American and should I e
cut out and pasted in your scrap
book where you can tiud it if you
need it:
At the first indication of diphtheria
in the throat make the room c)o,e
then take a teacup nnd pour into it
an equal quantity of turpentine and
tar then bold the cup over the fir» so
ns to fill the room with the fumes.
The patient inhaling the fumes will
cough out the membraneous matter
and diphtheria will pass off.
The
fumes of tar and turpentine loosen
the throat aud thus afford the relief
that has baffled the skill of the pbysi
cinos.
