Beams of prosperity are said to be
reflected iu tbo wheat fields, but it is
a foregoue conclusion that transporta,
tion companies will be aide to take
out tho reflection and extract the
beams long before tbo wheat reaches
its final market.
Franco is after that old bird which
roosts on the Bosphorus and goes by
the toothsome name of Turkey. Each
of tbo European nations have in turn
been trying to extract oil from that
old fowl, and it begins to look as
though the carving act is on. The
old prevaricator must have b<r mind
up to fight as 61ie has ordered
throe hundred guns from Germany.
The Qreponicin lias repeatedly
shown that protective tariff builds up
and fosters trusts, and in a late issue
it goes to work to prove that free
trado is not a panacea for trusts.
There are practically only the two
conditions to depend upon, with tho
middle grouud of “tariff for revenue
only”, and if the two extremes aro of
no avail, it is about equally certain
that the middle ground is untenable.
However do not lose hope, as there is
a panacea in government ownership,
and in the sweet by and by tho com
petitive system will dio out like tho
embers of a deserted camp lire. Self
preservation of the buinau family
demands it.
Growth in the fiiae of Ships
A .MOTHER COOSI-J.ING.
Monthlv Review.
The growth in the size of ships be-
camo most marked in the closing
years of the century. Ten years ago
there was not afloat a single vessel of
10,000 tons; in 1901 there will bo 25.
In 1802 there were launched in the
United Kingdom 37 steamers of over
4000 tons; in 1900 no fewer than 125
were built. Of the now steamers of
over 10,000 tons to be born in the
first year of the new century, five will
Im over 18,000 ton« each. Who cun
place a limit on what the new century
may see? It is stated by a well known
¿^ipbuilder that he is ready even now
to build a steamer of 50,000 tons if
desired. As far as material is con
cerned, the thing is quite practicable,
though it may be questioned if it is
desirable to place such enormous
risks on one bottom. But before
further increasing the size of ocean
carriers, the problem to be solved is
how to increase speed without in
creasing tho consumption of coal.

Turkey'« Downfall Predicted.
W ashington , Aug. 27.- It is feared
in official circles that tho withdrawal
of the French Ambassador from Con
stantinople marks the dissolution of
the concert of European powers un
der which the integrity of Turkov
was guaranteed. By the treaty of
Berlin all the great powers of Europe
subscribed to an agreement to refrain
from auy act that would tend to tbo
destruction of the Ottoman Empire.
This action was taken to forestall
what were conceived to be the de
signs of Russia to soizo Turkish ter
ritory, and Russia her elf was led to
subscribe to tho agreement by force
of circumstances. Although several
times strained, notably by such events
as the last war between Turkey and
Greece, this pact has so far endured
without amendment, but it is appro
bended now that if the action of
France is carried out to tho extremo
indicated in tho dispatches, each of
tho other signatory powers will feel
obliged>in selfprotcction to disregard
tho agreement aud press upon Turkey
the vast financial and other claims
that have accumulated in the past
quarter of u century, with a result of
disrupting the present Turkish Gov
erument.
