16 JUNE 1, 2023 Smoke Signals Feeling good Tribe receives $500,000 to improve wireless network WASHINGTON, D.C. 3 The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde will receive a $500,000 federal grant to build a oxed wireless network providing high-speed Internet connections to 200 unserved house- holds in the Grand Ronde community, U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced on Wednesday, May 24. <Quality rural broadband is essential to quality of life, and that infrastructure priority must include Tribal communities,= Wyden said in a press release. <In today9s world, reliable and affordable broadband is crucial for Tribal communities to succeed,= Merkley added. The grant is from the National Telecommunications and Informa- tion Administration9s Tribal broadband connectivity program created and funded by the 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act. <Thanks to this generous grant we9ve been awarded, we can con- tinue to grow and strengthen our digital infrastructure, ensuring our members remain connected and active in our online spaces,= Tribal Council Chairwoman Cheryle A.
