A top story during the Monday, April 17, news cycle concerned an
estimated 1,000-year-old Waccamaw Indian dugout canoe that was
recovered from a lake in Wilmington, N.C.
ABC11 news reported on the canoe9s extraction. In their video
published to YouTube, ABC11 states teenagers stumbled upon the
canoe while swimming in Lake Waccamaw in 2021.
The long-awaited removal is shown onally concluding with almost
15 people carrying the 28-foot-long dugout canoe out of the water on
Wednesday, April 12.
<This canoe is about a 1,000 years old and it9s a southeast Indian
canoe,= State Archaeologist John Mintz says. <It originated from this
area so we wanted the local Indian group to be a part of it and share
with the agency of it.=
The ABC11 video shows Tribal people gathering on the beach to
watch the canoe9s extraction. Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Chief Michael
Jacobs spoke to the gathering crowd and is shown blessing the canoe.
Other Tribal people are shown drumming and singing.
Jacobs said this canoe will allow his Tribe to teach an accurate his-
tory of their people after it has been examined with scientioc testing
and Elder historical knowledge.
<Our history is still unfolding,= Jacobs says.
Jacobs said colonial contact meant the loss of historical and cultural
knowledge. This resurfacing of the canoe helps piece together his
Tribe9s story with tangible evidence.
