Tribal members Bobby Mercier
and Brian Krehbiel participated
in a new documentary short by
olmmaker Woodrow Hunt (Klam-
ath/Modoc/Cherokee) about Canoe
Journey.
<Canoes have always been in-
tegral to our region's Indigenous
cultures and they still are today,=
stated a press release from Con-
fluence, a nonprofit Indigenous
group that collaborated on the
project.
The olm, 8Stories from the Canoe,9
explores the history and ongoing
development of Canoe Journey.
Recently, Tribal canoe families
gathered to celebrate the release
of the new olm at a screening with
PAM CUT and the Portland Art
Museum. The celebration included
singing, drumming and prayers,
followed by a panel discussion with
canoe skippers.
The olm was jointly funded by the
Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Con-
federated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
According to the press release,
the olm project was conceived orig-
inally as a public gathering.
<Several years ago, Tribal lead-
ers envisioned a Native canoe
race and celebration of culture,= it
stated. <The idea was that Connu-
ence could facilitate the gathering
rather than act as a formal host.
CanoeFluence 4 as the race event
became known 4 would be an
opportunity for canoe family mem-
bers to compete and share culture.
As the pandemic wore on, we had
to transition our plans to instead
focusing on the olm.=
The film premiere provided an
opportunity for canoe families to
gather and share their experiences
and culture.
The Grand Ronde Tribe first
participated in Canoe Journey in
2005 during the Paddle to Elwha
in Port Angeles, Wash. This year9s
Canoe Journey will be the Paddle to
Muckleshoot in Washington state.
