Dear Smoke Signals:
Today is my anniversary date of 19 years of service on paper with our
Tribe. I write this letter with a very heavy heart. One month and four days
ago, my son left this earth to embark on his next journey. This is one of
the hardest journeys I have ever had to experience.
He was almost 4 years old when I came back to start my employment
once again with our Tribe. I was a single mom again, and he went every-
where with me.
I always said, <Come on, son.= I had to work or we were volunteering at
some kind of Tribal event or attending a conference with my mom. Some-
times he would say, <I don9t want to go= and I would say, <Get in the car. You
don9t have a choice.= Once the day was done, he would always take his hand
and put it on my hand and say, <Thank you, Mama. That was so much fun.=
We continued on this journey until he was well into his teenage years.
He loved going to the summer youth camp and made so many friends
and became everyone9s favorite friend. Some of our most memorable trips
together were the Tribal Canoe Journey. The one to Bella Bella, Canada,
being his most favorite of all even though it was long. It was here where
he learned of his own spirituality within himself and the love of his Tribe.
Thank you all who showed up at my home the day of this tragic loss. Just
being there present with my family was comforting for all of us.

Lara, Jordan Mercier, Zoey Holsclaw, Kailiyah Krehbiel and many more.
We are so very blessed for the ceremony in the house. It was beautiful and
powerful with so many of the Tribal community present.
My family and I want to say <Thank you= to all of our Tribal and com-
munity family who gave our family unconditional love, support, prayers,
visits, food, gifts, nowers and so much more during this time. We are so
blessed and appreciate all of you.

ty of Oregon, is published twice a month. No portion of this publication may be reprinted
without permission.
Our editorial policy is intended to encourage input from Tribal members and readers
about stories printed in the Tribal newspaper. However, all letters received must be
signed by the author, an address must be given and a phone number or e-mail address
must be included for veriocation purposes. Full addresses and phone numbers will not
be published unless requested. Letters must be 400 words or less.
