Kennedy was honored for her “consistent advocacy and intentional efforts to advance civil rights for all Oregonians” by the League of Minority Voters on Thursday, May 5, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland. From left, League of Minority Voters Board member Dr. Bud Pierce, League of Minority Voters President Promise King and board member Ethan Durham stood with Kennedy after she received the Civil Rights Champions Award, which was created in 2010 to recognize Oregonians who have promoted civil rights for all of the state’s residents. The League of Minority Voters was founded by King in 2002 as a nonpartisan organization to promote the advancement of minority voters’ rights through education, empowerment and mobilization. The building at 800 SE 10th Ave. currently features a gallery displaying Native American artwork, including artwork by Grand Ronde Tribal member and Cultural Policy Analyst Greg Archuleta. Smoke Signals toured the building with NACF’s Vice President of Programs and Partnerships Barbara Mumby-Huerta, who said the center will continue to show exhibitions through 2023 before beginning major renovations. They plan to open again in 2025 as a gathering place for Native artists with a black-box theater, new gallery, art studios, tributary-access ceremony spaces and a rooftop garden.
