8 MAY 1, 2022 Smoke Signals Grand Ronde Tribal members joined other volunteers to help plant approximately 3,000 wapato bulbs at Wapato Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Gaston on Monday, April 18. Wapato Lake is undergoing restoration to improve wapato and wildlife populations. Wapato Lake is within the ancestral homelands of the Tualatin Kalapuya who had numerous villages around the lake and gathered the wapato for subsistence and trade. Tribal Council member Jon A.
