Gonzalez Natural Resources Department Fish & Wildlife Program Manager Kelly Dirksen speaks before Grand Ronde Tribal members and employees who tried to install the temporary fishing platform at Willamette Falls in Oregon City on Tuesday, April 26. They were unable to start because of the dangerous condition of the water flowing over the falls. According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, water flow over the falls on Tuesday was approximately 25,000 cubic feet per second. When the weather and water conditions are better, it will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes for the Tribal crew to erect the platform. Dirksen said the Tribal crew will reconvene on Tuesday, May 3, to try again. smok signflz , a publication of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Communi- ty of Oregon, is published twice a month. Dangerous water conditions forced the Tribal crew to postpone its efforts until weather and water conditions improve. This year’s Tribal fishing schedule at the platform tentatively has Tribal members at the falls on every Tuesday and Thursday in May trying to catch the state-sanctioned limit of 15 salmon using the traditional dip-netting method. Grand Ronde Tribal members have been fishing at the falls off the temporary platform since 2018 in an effort to catch salmon for ceremonial purposes. tribalcouncil@grandronde.org  Cheryle A.
