Grand Ronde Editorial Board position openings Bernadette Renee Feehan The Grand Ronde Editorial Board, a Tribal board assigned the duty by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde (“Grand Ronde”) of overseeing its independent Tribal press (Smoke Signals), invites applications to serve on the Grand Ronde Editorial Board. There will be one (1) open board positions occurring in March 2021. The five-member Grand Ronde Editorial Board is responsible to the Grand Ronde Tribal Council. It oversees the editor of Smoke Signals to ensure the independent Tribal press reports news free from any undue influence and free from any political interest, and that Tribal news em- ployees adhere to the highest ethical journalistic standards. The Editorial Board meets monthly. From time to time, additional spe- cial meetings may be held. Board members are expected to attend all meetings in person, although participation by telephone or video will be permitted. Each board member receives a monthly stipend for attending meetings. Travel reimbursement is limited to travel within the six counties of Polk, Yamhill, Marion, Tillamook, Multnomah and Washington. Board members must be 18 years of age, have qualified experience in management and/or publications, be of good character and integrity, and certify that he or she will adhere to the standards of accepted ethics of journalism as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists and endorsed by the Native American Journalists Association. Experience with and knowledge of Native American organizations is also preferred, as well as dedication to protecting and advancing a free press for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Applicants will be interviewed by the Grand Ronde Editorial Board before a recommendation is forwarded to Tribal Council. Terms run for three years. Preference will be given to qualified Tribal members. Submission deadline: 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2021 Oct. 10, 1973 – Nov. 15, 2020 Bernadette “Bernie” Renee Feehan will be re- membered as a ray of sunshine to her family and many friends. She was a genuine soul who made everyone she met feel like the closest of friends. Bernie was born on Oct. 10, 1973, to James and Barbara Feehan (McKnight) and raised in Oregon, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She graduated from La Salle Catholic College Preparatory in Milwaukie, Ore., in 1991 and attended Portland State Uni- versity. She lived on Maui, Hawaii, for most of her adult life, working in and managing restaurants and working at the local Kihei farmers market, where she treated customers as old friends. She also loved her pet felines. Her tremendous love of life, of Maui, of friends and family, and of partner Kevin always will be remembered. Bernie was a beloved daughter, sister, auntie and friend to many. She is survived by her mother, Barbara Feehan of McMinnville; and sister, Kathleen George and husband, Rick, of McMinnville; and three nephews, Sean and Noah Gerbrandt of McMinnville and Dylan George of Eugene. Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020 March 11, 1963 – Dec. 1, 2020 Tribal Elder Janet Louise Titus, 57, gained her angel wings on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020. Janet was born on March 11, 1963, in Gridley, Calif., to Robert Simi and An- nabell Houck. She was proud to be a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and attended as many cultural and Tribal events that she could. Her grandchildren were her greatest blessings and she enjoyed attending their sporting events along with other activities and events. She loved to spend time with her family and friends. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed, such as sewing, crocheting, reading, arts and crafts and playing bingo. She loved Mickey and Minnie Mouse and country music. Janet is survived by her sisters, Julie Little, Jill Brandon, Jeanna Buxton, Janie Stuck, Jolene Kamna, Erin Bowers and Rebecca Carter; brother, Joe Simi; daughters, Shannon Simi and Amanda Buxton; sons, Doug and Bryan Gore; and grandchildren, Dominik, Kaleigha, Landen, Nevaeh, Abigail and Vivian.
