16 SEPTEMBER 1, 2020 Smoke Signals On Friday, Aug. 14, the 2020-21 Royalty Pageant was held at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds among royalty contestants and their immediate family. The socially distanced event had plenty of space for families and judges to sit in their own areas while wearing masks. Tribal Elder Susie Lash, crown artisan Tammy Fisher and Spirit Mountain Casino Mar- keting Director Shawna Ridgebear served as judges for the 10 contes- tants. Bad Soul provided previously recorded songs for use during the pageant, outgoing and coronation segments. During the outgoing portion, Senior Miss Grand Ronde Iyana Holmes reminded those in attendance that “family is not just the people you’re related to by blood, but it’s the people who make a big impact in your life.” Joyful tears were shed as Holmes reminisced about her eight years of service on Grand Ronde Royalty and the experiences that were offered to her. Coronation brought an end to the day’s anticipation for two Senior Miss contestants, one Junior Miss, six Little Miss contestants and one Tiny Tot. This closeknit group of young women are ready to represent the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde during these challenging times as your 2020-21 court. hayu masi 2019-20 Court: From left, Senior Miss Grand Ronde Iyana Holmes, Junior Miss Grand Ronde Kaleigha Simi and Little Miss Grand Ronde Sophia Grout. I’m happy to be representing the Tribe with my sister again this year. I am in the sixth grade at Sheridan Japanese School. Some of the activities I enjoy are painting, cooking, swimming and riding bikes. When I grow up, I want to be a chef and own my own chain of restaurants. Over the summer I took part in the YED activity boxes and Youth Empowerment “Cooking with Shannon” pro- grams. They were both so much fun and I would encourage other youth to join. I would like to thank Tammy Fisher for my beautiful crown and I hope to see you all in person real soon. My plans for after graduation are to attend the Ore- gon Institute of Technology and study dental hygiene. I am looking forward to representing my Tribe one last time. This year I hope to bring attention to the issue of mental ill- ness as well as educate Native youth about it. While this year may look different from others, I will still put forth my best effort to represent my Tribe, community and family in the best way possible. I hope you all and your families are staying safe and protected. Masi Hello. My name is Kalea Liebelt. I’m your current Little Miss Grand Ronde 2020-21.
