Community Fund seeks
Hatfi eld Fellowship applicants
Applications for the 2020-21 Hatfi eld Fellowship program are
being accepted through April 30.
The fellowship program is funded by Spirit Mountain Community
Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde.
The Community Fund annually sponsors a highly motivated
Native American to serve as the Hatfi eld Fellow and intern in an
Oregon congressional offi ce. Placement of the fellow rotates through
the Oregon delegation to improve the mutual understanding between
leadership in Washington, D.C., and Indian Country.
Fellows gain knowledge and understanding of how to navigate the
political process in Washington, D.C., while working on issues that
directly affect Native Americans.
Hatfi eld Fellows begin their Capitol Hill experience in November
with a month-long orientation at the American Political Science
Association. Then they serve an eight-month internship in a con-
gressional offi ce while receiving a monthly stipend and relocation
and travel expenses.
Tribal members from the nine federally recognized Tribes in Or-
egon, as well as members of Tribes in Washington, Idaho, Montana
and Alaska, are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to Oregon
Tribal members. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or be
graduating in June and be 21 or older to apply.
The Hatfi eld Fellowship was created in 1998 to honor Sen. Mark
Hatfi eld’s public service to Oregon and the Pacifi c Northwest.

Fund starts Youth
Grantmaking Program
Spirit Mountain Community Fund has created a new Youth Grantmaking
Program in conjunction with the Tribe’s Summer Youth Employment Pro-
gram to engage Tribal students with philanthropy and community service.
The program (Tenes Palach-Kilapay) will introduce four Tribal youth to
nonprofi t organizations and allow them to see fi rsthand the need for assis-
tance in local communities and learn how they can help make a difference
through volunteerism and philanthropy while earning high school credit.
The Summer Youth Program will work with Community Fund staff
to select nonprofi t organizations to receive a special grant award. Stu-
dents will work as a group to read, review and score all applications for
consideration. They also will conduct site visits and volunteer with each
organization before making funding recommendations to the Community
Fund’s Board of Trustees in July.
Once funding decisions are made, students will notify all grant recipients
and invite them to a check presentation ceremony where they will gift
them with their grant awards.
The Youth Grantmaking Program is for high school juniors and seniors who
are eligible to apply for the Tribe’s Summer Youth Employemnt Program.
For more information, visit www.grandronde.org/employment and select the
Summer Youth Employment link that will be posted on Friday, March 6.
Selected students will perform basic offi ce duties, such as fi ling, scanning
and data entry, when they are not working on the grantmaking project. n
