Letters
Dear Smoke Signals:
As for your story regarding roads in Grand Ronde and making comments
about trucks ruining the road, I have a few comments:
1) The pothole that was shown was not fixed right. It was done with a
cold patch, which did not work. For the state to do it right, they would
have had to spend money and dig it out and re-do the whole spot.
2) Let’s talk something about money. Does anyone that does not own a
truck have any idea what a truck pays to run up and down the high-
ways? I do. For every 100 miles, each and every truck pays about $23.
I mean every truck. The log trucks can pay on a monthly basis and pay
as little as $500 a month just to travel the road. Do the math on 5,000
log trucks playing the flat rate. Do you want to talk chip trucks over
$2,000 flat fee for the month? Have you ever counted the trucks on the
road? There are a lot of them out there.
So if each truck out there – let’s say 10,000 trucks for a round number
– only travel 100 miles in a month and we all know that they run more,
the state takes from those 10,000 trucks $230,000 for road maintenance.
So, I ask you where is all that money? Why aren’t they fixing the road
right? The trucks do not cause the potholes, it’s the soft underlayment
that causes that.
The trucks, no matter what they are, pay a lot of money to help maintain
the roads. The reason they pay so much is because they are hard on the
roads. But fix them right. You can’t tell me there is not money to fix them.
So, why don’t we ask the question of where is all the money going and
why do they not fix the roads the way they are supposed to be done?
