This nonfi ction piece covers one of mountaineering’s worst tragedies — the 1967 Wilcox Mt. McKinley expedition. By examining and interpreting a large number of interviews, footage, recordings and documents, James M. Tabor gives one of the most accurate accounts of what may have conspired along that harrowing trip up North America’s tallest peaks. A 12-man expedition, led by then 24-year-old Joe Wilcox, was left strand- ed at 20,000 feet in what many believe was the worst recorded arctic storm in McKinley’s history. Many factors played a role in why rescue attempts were not as suffi cient as they should have been. However one thing is certain, seven of the 12-man crew perished. This book keeps readers engaged and interested. Tabor writes with an exquisite, reasoned and investigative style that allows the reader to grasp the fi ne details of climbing giants like McKinley. Tabor looks at elements of controversy, fi nger-pointing and even cover-up that make this disaster unlike any other. — Reviewed by Harris Reibach Donations: A special thanks to Sam George, Barbara Danforth and others for their contributions to the Tribal Library’s collection.
