Polk County Deputy Chris Knudson helps Tribal youth Jack Mercier,
7, look for Christmas gifts during the annual Shop With a Cop event
held on Saturday, Dec. 8. The event helped 13 youths from the Grand
Ronde community with their Christmas shopping at the Dallas Wal-
Mart. Officers from the Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department, Polk
County Sheriff’s Office, Independence and Dallas police departments,
and West Valley Fire assisted the children with shopping for themselves
and family members. Afterward, the youths returned to Grand Ronde
and wrapped the presents. Tribal Police Department Lt. Tim Hernandez
said the funding for the program comes from Social Services and the
Tribal Police Department’s citation revenue fund. “We purchase gifts, a
stocking full of goodies for each child, one gift card per family to help
with the holiday meal, a gingerbread house per family, food and drinks,
and all the wrapping supplies.”
