Drug take-back event
scheduled for Oct. 27
The Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department and the Drug Enforcement
Administration will hold another drug take-back event from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9655 Grand Ronde Road.
This will be the 16th opportunity for people to prevent pill abuse and
theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and
unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, but the
event will not accept liquids or needles or sharps; only pills and patches.
The DEA and its state, local and Tribal law enforcement partners
removed almost 475 tons of medications during the last National Drug
Take-Back Day held on April 28. Residents of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and
Washington accounted for more than 20 tons of that total at 190 take-back
sites in the Northwest.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about
the Take-Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com. 

Medication drop box installed
The Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department, 9655 Grand Ronde
Road, now has a medication drop box located in the front lobby.
Lobby hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The drop box is for any prescribed or over-the-counter medication.
If the containers are too large to fit in the drop box, please repackage
them in a zip-lock plastic bag. Tribal Police employees cannot handle
the medications so the person dropping them off must repackage
them.
Needles and liquids are not allowed in the drop box.
Tribal Police suggest mixing liquid medications with cat litter or
coffee grounds and then throwing them away with the household
trash.

Police Department has
non-emergency text line
The Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department has created a non-emer-
gency text line.
“We learned in our last school meeting that kids would like a different
way to communicate with the police if they have a non-emergency situ-
ation,” Tribal Police Chief Jake McKnight said. “We all know kids love
to text so my officers and I decided this would be a great tool to utilize.”
The new text number is 541-921-2927.
“Even though this is mostly designed for children, I don’t want adults
thinking that they can’t use it as well. If you have a non-emergency situ-
ation or question, feel free to contact my officer via text through this line.
When one of my officers receives the text, they will call you back when
they have time.”
McKnight said that emergency situations still require people to call 911.
For more information, contact McKnight at 503-879-1474. 

“W e need a free press. We must have it. It’s vital. ... If you want to preserve democracy as
we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I
am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. ”
