Late-summer kicks
The second annual Portland Timbers and Thorns FC Spirit Mountain
Soccer Clinic was held on Monday, Aug. 13, on the Tribal campus. Spirit
Mountain Casino has a partnership and sponsorship with the Timbers
and Thorns. About 50 Tribal and community youth participated in the
clinic for soccer players ages 5 to 18 years old. Timbers youth coaches
Houston Greenberg, Daniel Alonzo and Ethan Weinman guided the par-
ticipants in warm-ups, as well as soccer skill drills and games. “A lot of
the kids do not have a background in soccer, but they come out with basic
skills and have seemed to really take to soccer,” said Spirit Mountain Ca-
sino Sponsorship Coordinator Jocelyn Huffman. “It’s been a very positive
experience for me to work with the Timbers and Thorns because they
really do want to be involved in our community here in Grand Ronde.”
Former Timbers player Jack Jewsbury also attended and helped facili-
tate the clinic. “He’s been a large part of getting the clinic off the ground,”
Huffman said.
