Riley Freeman rides Boots during the Mid-Summer Bull Blast
competition held at the Tribal Rodeo Arena on Saturday, July, 14. In
a bucking bull competition, the bulls, not the riders, are judged. The
bulls are judged on their ability to buck, kick and spin, and for their
intensity and degree of difficulty. During the event, Tribal Council
Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy gave a presentation in remembrance
of Tribal member and the arena founder Marvin Kimsey, who walked
on on March 4. She discussed Kimsey’s rodeo career. He found his love
for the sport while rounding up wild mustangs in Warm Springs as a
young man. The original arena was located on Spirit Mountain Casino
property, but Kimsey had the arena moved to Tribal grounds for more
space. He became Rodeo Committee chairman and gathered volunteers
to create the arena. Kennedy also gifted Kimsey’s son, Tribal Elder Duke
Kimsey, a Pendleton blanket. The Bull Blast was hosted by the Tribe and
presented by Radranch Bucking Bulls, owned by Tribal member Dave
Cantwell and his wife, Rhonda, and bulls competing in the event were
from the High Desert Bucking Bull Association.
