Book Review: “Hello Universe” by Erin Entrada Kelly.
Virgil has always been called “turtle” because of his shy person-
ality. When a new girl, Valencia, starts school in his resource room
class, he notices she wears hearing aids. Virgil immediately wants
to be friends with her, but being the “shy guy” Virgil does not have
the nerve to talk to her.
Virgil’s best friend, Kaori, is a self-proclaimed psychic. When Virgil
tells her about Valencia, Kaori predicts that fate will unite them soon.
Kaori has her own psychic business and posts her business cards
at the local market. Valencia sees the business card and sets up a
meeting with the psychic using a fictitious name.
On his way to meet Kaori, Virgil takes the shortcut trail through
the woods with his pet guinea pig, Gulliver, and there he runs into the
school bully Chet Bullens. Chet grabs Virgil’s backpack and throws
it down a well not knowing that Gulliver is in the backpack. Virgil
is terrified of the dark, but he knows he has to go down into the well
to save Gulliver.
Kaori waits and waits for Virgil to meet up with her as they had
planned after her psychic meeting with Valencia. Kaori just knows
something is wrong and so she recruits Valencia to help her find
Virgil. With fate on his side, Virgil and Valencia finally meet though
in a most awkward, but lifesaving way. – By Kayla Grijalva
