Winter Reading Incentive Program: “Get Fired Up for Reading!”
ended Feb. 28. We have a big plump dragon that will be up in the library
until mid-March. A scale was added for each book read with the reader’s
name. The number of scales and readers will be reported in the next Smoke
Signals. Our goal was to have 300 books read and we have 278 so far.
Book Review: “If I Stay” by Gayle Forman: One beautiful snowy day,
17-year-old Mia and her family go for a family drive, headed out to have
fun. Mia sits in the back seat with her brother Teddy with her mom and
dad in the front seat. Mia has always loved classical music, a sound that
becomes the last thing she hears as a big truck slams into their car.
Mia loses her parents in that instant. Mia is unconscious from a head
injury, but somehow she can see Teddy and herself being rushed to the
hospital. She sees them get wheeled into emergency and the intensive care
unit, and she hopes against hope they can save Teddy, who is badly injured.
Mia can see her grandparents, she can see her best friend Kim and her
boyfriend Adam crying as they wait, and she can see her little brother
Teddy as he starts to seize and she knows. Mia begins to realize that
she is in some kind of out-of-body experience.
Mia reflects on what’s happened. She knows her life will be sad with
all of her family gone. Mia reflects on what she has left, and thinks about
the ones who are still there, waiting. In this dream-like state, Mia must
decide if she will wake up from the coma or not. — by Kayla Grijalva

Inter-Library Loan services: The Tribal Library partners with
Oregon State Library to offer “library to library” inter-library loan ser-
vices. By completing the inter-library loan form, library patrons may
request items from the Oregon State Library collection. Items will be
couriered to and from the Tribal Library. OSL lending policies apply
for return of items.

Annual Tamanowas Ceremony and Museum Internship Program.
The Application Process is open to High School Males that meet the
following qualifications:
Enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde
Current Sophomore, Junior, Senior in High School
G.P.A. of 2.5 or above
Oregon Resident
Application Deadline is March 30th, 5pm
