2017-18 Oregon Battle of the Books: Forty-four new titles are
available at the library for check out for third- through 12th-grad-
ers in the Elementary & Young Adult collection. Library staff will
prepare reviews of selected titles and post them with the book.
Staff Picks: “The Seventh Most Important Thing” by Shelly
Pearsall. Published in 2015. Young adult fiction. Summary: One
kid, one crime, one chance to make things right. One bitter cold day
in 1963, 13-year-old Arthur T. Owens picks up a brick and throws
it at the neighborhood junk man’s head. Amazingly, it is the junk
man who makes a deal with a judge and instead of sending Arthur
to a juvenile detention center, the judge sentences Arthur to 120
hours of community service working for the junk man. The author
tells a powerful story about discovering what shines within us all
even when life seems full of darkness. This story is based on real
artist James Hampton, a solitary man who created his vision of
Heaven out of discarded furniture, foil, glass, mirrors, coffee cans,
cardboard and light bulbs. These objects make up “The Throne of
the Third Heaven,” Hampton’s masterpiece that is on permanent
exhibit in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian American Art
Museum.
“The War That Saved My Life” by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.
Elementary non-fiction. Summary: Ada is 10 years old and has
never left her house. She has a twisted foot and a horrible embar-
rassing feeling on her back due to her mom constantly shaming her
over the deformity. With an abusive mom and war about to start in
London, Ada and Jamie are shipped out of town to escape the war.
Mrs. Smith is forced to take care of Ada and Jamie during these
desperate times. Ada is starting to realize there could be a whole
new meaning to life if she puts forth the effort it takes. She starts
to realize she is very passionate about horses under Mrs. Smith’s
care. When war begins, life starts to get very hard on Jamie and
Ada. Will they make it through the war? Or will they end up back
into their mother’s horrible care?
