Watershed Council
offering fall bird walks
The Luckiamute Watershed Council and bird expert Joel Geier will be
offering a series of bird walks starting at 8 a.m. and ending at noon at
either the Luckiamute State Natural Area near Albany or Fort Hoskins
Historic County Park near Philomath.
Lunches will be provided by Independence bakery Ovenbird.
Each location offers new landscapes, a different array of bird life and a
fresh look at some of the iconic landscapes found in the watershed, Outreach
Coordinator Suzanne Teller said.
Cost for each bird walk is $10, which includes lunch. To register, visit

The bird walks are part of the “Love Your Watershed Series,” which recent-
ly received a $4,460 grant from Spirit Mountain Community Fund. Future
workshops will include a discussion of Native American ethnobotany.

Sewing class participants wanted
The sewing classes that have been held at the Elders Activity Center
have been canceled due to lack of participation.
Classes could resume if at least six people commit to attending.

Museum inviting designs for
Native American memorial
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Museum of the American Indian
is inviting people to submit designs to build the National Native American
Veterans Memorial, which is slated to open in 2020.
The international competition is open to students, architects, designers
and anyone else who wants to submit a design.
The Veterans Memorial will be placed on museum grounds at the Na-
tional Mall. A blue-ribbon jury of Native and non-Native artists, designers,
scholars and veterans will judge the design entries.
The competition consists of two stages: An open call to submit designs
and the jury selecting five finalists.

2018 Indian Housing Plan (IHP)
Under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Deter-
mination Act of 1996, (NAHASDA), the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD) will provide grants to Indian Tribes/
Indian Housing Authorities for the development and operation of
low-income housing in Indian areas. Grants are made to eligible
recipients under the Indian Housing Block Grant Program. To be
eligible for the grants, respondents must submit an Indian Housing
Plan that meets the minimum requirements of the Act, and also
submit an Annual Performance Report to HUD, and maintain re-
cords for HUD monitoring. The Grand Ronde Housing Department
(GRHD) has received multiple grants under this program which
were active during 2017.
Comments on the Indian Housing Plan are welcome and copies
of this report can be obtained at the GRHD office or by calling 503-
879-2401, or 800-422-0232, ext. 2401. Comments must be submitted
in writing to GRHD no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2017. All
comments will be incorporated into the final report submitted to
HUD.
Housing Board seeks community input
The Grand Ronde Housing Board is inviting Tribal members and Trib-
al housing residents to provide input to assist its members in carrying
out its advisory role to the Housing Department and Tribal Council
regarding policy guidance. The Housing Board meets at 3 p.m. the third
Thursday of each month in the Housing Department conference room,
28450 Tyee Road. Its chair is Matt Thomas. For more information,
