Cultural exchange
Photos by Dean Rhodes
Thirteen students from Fu Jen Catholic University in New Taipei
City, Taiwan, visited the Grand Ronde Tribe on Wednesday, July
19, to participate in a cultural exchange. Oregon State University
Human Development & Family Sciences instructor Tasha Galardi
said the school has had an exchange program with Fu Jen for
more than 10 years because a former dean of Public Health was
a graduate of the Taiwanese university. The students specifically
requested coming to Oregon because they feel a kinship with
Native American culture and history, Galardi said. They also
visited the Siletz and Warm Springs Tribes during their stay
in Oregon. During the cultural exchange inside achaf-hammi,
the Tribal plankhouse, the Taiwanese students explained the
indigenous Tribes of their island nation and performed songs
and dances. About 70 Tribal youth and adults, including Tribal Council
member Chris Mercier, attended. The Taiwanese students were
welcomed with a drum song performed by Cultural Resources staff
members David Harrelson, Jordan Mercier, Brian Krehbiel and Travis
Stewart, and Jordan Mercier smudged the plankhouse before the
exchange started. After the Taiwanese students performed, Grand
Ronde Tribal members performed about eight Tribal songs and lunch
was served.
