In a partnership between the Grand Ronde Tribal Police Department
and the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, the police
department’s new conference room table was built in the prison’s
wood shop. Tribal Police Chief Jake McKnight and Tribal Lt. Tim
Hernandez consulted with Cory Baird, the prison’s Cabinet Shop
manager, on the design and type of wood that could be used to build
the table. McKnight and Hernandez picked the final design. Sapele,
the darker wood that is the main part of the table, and hickory, the
trim pieces, were used and inmates were part of the crew that built
it to the police department’s specifications. The table also includes a
laser cutout of the department’s badge inlayed in the middle of the
table. McKnight estimates the table would cost close to $5,000 if it
were bought online or if someone built it. It only cost the department
$1,500 for the materials. The labor was free as the prison helps with
community projects.
