Mary Gautreaux, deputy state director for Democratic U.S. Sen. Ron
Wyden, visited Tribal Council on Monday, June 12, to deliver a framed
copy of the Grand Ronde Reservation Act amendment signed into law by
President Barack Obama in December 2016. The amendment streamlines
how the Tribe can take former Reservation land into trust and ends a
costly and time-consuming two-step process. Gautreaux presented the
framed copy to Tribal Council Chairman Reyn Leno. Other Tribal Council
members in attendance were Vice Chair Cheryle A. Kennedy and Denise
Harvey, Kathleen George and Jack Giffen Jr. The framed copy was signed
by Wyden, fellow U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley and U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader.
“That represents seven years of work,” Giffen said. In return, Leno and
Kennedy presented Gautreaux with a framed map that outlines the
Tribe’s ceded homelands and lists the Tribe’s seven treaties with the
federal government. Gautreaux said she would take the map back to
Wyden’s office in Washington, D.C., and hang it prominently on the wall.
“We hope so,” Leno said. During her visit, Tribal Council also briefed
Gautreaux on the lack of federal funding for Terminated Tribes when it
comes to law enforcement and George asked if Wyden’s office would be
interested in hosting a Hatfield Fellow in 2018.
