George appointed to Oregon
Environmental Quality Commission

SALEM — Tribal Council mem-
ber Kathleen George has been ap-
pointed by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown
as one of three new members of the
Oregon Environmental Quality
Commission.
If confirmed by the Oregon Sen-
ate during an April 26 hearing,
George will begin serving on the
commission on May 3.
“The Environmental Quality
Commission, now more than ever,
has a critical role to play to pro-
tect Oregon’s clean air and water
resources,” Brown said. “As an
oversight body, Oregonians expect
the EQC to take decisive action to
create rules and guide policies that
are protective of human health and
preserve vital habitats of diverse
species by ensuring our air and
water are clean and available for
future generations of Oregonians.”
The commission is a five-member
panel appointed by the governor
to four-year terms. Members serve
as the state Department of En-
vironmental Quality’s policy and
rulemaking board. It also issues
orders, judges appeals of fines or
other departmental actions, and
appoints the department’s director.

ronmental Quality Commission,”
George said. “Healthy people,

George will join the commission
along with fifth-generation Orego-
nian Wade Mosby and Oregon State
University associate professor Molly
Kile. Current commission members
Sam Baraso and Ed Armstrong will
continue serving on the commission.
George was elected to Tribal
Council in September 2016. Before
her election, she was director of
Spirit Mountain Community Fund,
the Tribe’s philanthropic arm, from
September 2011 through her elec-
tion to council.
She also worked for the Tribe’s
Natural Resources Department as
its environmental coordinator from
1996 to 2002 before moving to east-
ern Oregon to work for the Umatilla
Tribe as a water policy and senior
policy analyst. She also worked for
the Department of Environmental
Quality in Pendleton and owned a
natural resources consulting busi-
ness, Cedar Consulting.
George grew up in Milwaukie and
graduated from Dominican Univer-
sity in California with a bachelor’s
degree in environmental biology. n
Bike helmets available
The Tribe’s Social Services Department has bicycle helmets avail-
able for distribution.
Those needing a helmet need to visit the department and sign a
helmet application, as well as get fitted.

Veterans Royalty
Veterans Royalty work with the Veterans Special Event Board (Veterans
SEB). They attend powwows, parades, fundraisers, meetings and other events
with the Veterans SEB and the Honor Guard. They interact with and repre-
sent all veterans. They also work with the Grand Ronde Royalty during events
and activities such as Restoration, parades and fundraisers. The Veterans
Royalty should know what a veteran is and the different military branches.
When Veterans Royalty attend events, they are expected to stay for the
duration of the event. This includes helping to set up events, meetings and
parades and dancing during Grand Entry, InterTribals and staying until
the flags are retired. Veterans Royalty should have their own regalia and be
willing and able to dance.
GRAND RONDE VETERANS ROYALTY
Participating in Veterans Royalty is an excellent opportunity for Tribal girls
and young women to learn our traditions, powwow protocol and work with
veterans. Participants represent the veterans and the Tribe by attending
powwows and various community events.
We encourage all young woman ages 11-18 to join.
Junior Veterans Queen — 11-13 years of age
Senior Veterans Queen — 14-18 years of age
General Requirements:
1. Enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal member
2. Must be alcohol and drug free
3. Never married, no children
4. Attend school regularly and be in good standing
5. Sign and comply with Veteran Royalty

Tribal Dental Hygienist and Prevention Coordinator Sheila Blacketer,

Smile Day held at Willamina Elementary School on Friday, March 17.
Eighty-nine elementary school children were seen during the event
that screens children for cavities and brushes and applies fluoride to
their teeth. Tribal Dentist Erin Lange also screened children while Tribal
dental assistants Shelby Hoyt and Donnette Spaulding helped with
paperwork. The event is sponsored by the American Dental Association.
