Book review: “The Great Death” by John Smelcer.
For my December book review I selected “The Great Death.” John
Smelcer is the author of many nonfiction and poetry books for adults,
as well as “The Trap,” which was a Best Books for Young Adults top
ten pick and a VOYA magazine top shelf selection. Smelcer is the asso-
ciate publisher and poetry editor at the literary magazine “Rosebud.”
The main characters are 13-year-old Millie and her younger sister,
Maura, who are fascinated by guests to their village, but soon sickness
takes over. As they watch the people they know and love die of the
plague, the sisters realize that they will have to set out on their own
to find a new home. Alone in the cold Alaskan winter, struggling to
overcome obstacles nature throws their way, the girls discover that
their true strength lies in their love for each other.
I started this book thinking I was going to read a family love tale,
but I was pleasantly surprised to read a gripping and emotional sur-
vival story. Smelcer’s writing style is clean and rich, and he provides
a good basis on historical fact.
