Food Bank provides
boxes, seeks help
If you receive SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance, you auto-
matically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank, 9675
Grand Ronde Road.
Upcoming food box distribution dates will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday,
July 1; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July
15; 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 29.
The Food Bank is continuing to offer preservation and canning classes
at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27.
Those who are unable to pick up a food box may fill out an authorized
representative form and that person can pick up a food box on your
behalf. The authorization is good for one year.
The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is run by
Marion-Polk Food Share, which has been leading the fight to end hunger
since 1987 because no one should be hungry.
“We believe that everyone deserves to have enough to eat,” says Food
Bank Coordinator Francene Ambrose. “You are welcome to get a food
box at each of our regular weekly distributions. No one will be turned
away in need of a food box.”
The Food Bank continues to seek volunteers to help with repacking
food, putting food on the shelves, handing out food boxes and end-of-
the-month inventory. An all-volunteer meeting is scheduled to be held
at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12.
All volunteers also must attend annual mandatory training. The next
training, which will cover safe food handling, non-discrimination and
warehouse safety, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 12.
In addition, the Food Bank is participating in a program called Fresh
Alliance where volunteers pick up food donations directly from area
stores. Volunteers with a truck that could pick up these stores at least
once a week and a partner to ride and help load the truck are being
sought.
Call on non-distribution days to ensure someone is available to as-
sist you. You also can sign up for a monthly e-mail for the Food Bank
calendar and events, as well as follow the Food Bank on Facebook.
The Food Bank is an equal opportunity provider.
Contact Ambrose at 503-879-3663 or at fambrose@marionpolkfood-

University receives grant
to study Rogue River War
Southern Oregon University in Ashland received a $92,600 grant
from the National Park Service on Thursday, June 23, to fund a
project that will interpret the Rogue River War in a holistic way
for the public and interested scholars.
The project will produce multiple property nominations for the
National Register of Historic Places for sites related to the Rogue
River War that occurred in 1855-56.
Increased white settlement in the area caused ire among the
Rogue River people, leading to several conflicts. The project will
conduct historical research, an archaeological survey and GIS
mapping to determine the conflict’s boundary.
The grant was one of 20 awarded by the National Park Service
that totaled $1.19 million.
