Culture Within Our Youth
11-year-old Grand Ronde Tribal member Mason Mercier is the son of Tribal
member Tyson and Amanda Mercier. He also has an older brother, Moses.
Mason is on his way to becoming a Tribal arisan like his uncle, Tribal member
Travis Stewart.
At the early age of 7, Mason became interested in making tradiional Naive
American objects. Not knowing where to get informaion on how to do that, he
turned to YouTube. By watching the videos on YouTube he taught himself how
to make bows, arrows, flint knapping, and atlatls. Once his skills at flint knapping
became more advanced than the videos he iniially learned from, he was able to
get a few pointers from Eirik Thorsgard. Eventually, he decided to make his own
videos and place them on YouTube for others to learn from.
A very unique item that Mason made was a deer-skinned quiver. With the help of his
father and the skin from his brother’s deer, they were able to make this very beauiful
quiver to hold his bow and arrows.
During Mason’s early stages of making these tradiional items, he indulged in the crat of
basket weaving. In kindergarten, Mason learned to weave using pipe cleaners. Not unil
recently though, Mason decided to atend basket weaving classes offered at Chachalu:
Tribal Museum and Cultural Center. During these classes he was able to learn how to
weave baskets made out of more tradiional materials such as juncus, catail, cedar, and
hazel. He also learned how to prepare these materials to be used in the weaving process.
Mason is a great example of what we hope to see more of our youth doing.
