Chinuk wawa resources at Chachalu
There are many chinuk wawa resources at Chachalu that we would like everyone to know about.
We have a chinuk wawa dictionary that is for sale for $20. We are very proud of our dictionary
because it is one of the few Native Language Dictionaries that was written by Native speakers. Our
linguist, Henry Zenk, recorded our elder speakers more than 30 years ago and their words are
written in our dictionary.
We also have a set of 2 Language Learning CD’s and booklet that will teach you the basics of
learning chinuk wawa. The booklet set is sold for $15 at Chachalu.
Two books by Louis Kenoyer are also for sale for $15 a piece. “Excerpts From My Life” and
“Hunting Mt. Hebo with Yamhill Joe” were translated into chinuk wawa from stories that Louis was
recorded telling. The stories are about his life growing up in Grand Ronde, so they are very unique
to this area.
Language classes are also taught at Chachalu. Evening classes are offered on Monday nights at 4
p.m. This class is more of a structured class where we follow the college schedule. Another
opportunity to attend a language class is Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. at Chachalu. This is more
informal and can be flexible to fit those in attendance.
One of the resources that we are really proud of is our own language application. Our language app is
named chinuk wawa. It has over 27 categories with everything from traditional to modern day. The
entries for each category are in English but as soon as you touch on the word, the chinuk wawa spelling
and pronunciation appears. A lot of the photos in the categories are of Tribal members, which makes it
more meaningful. There are games and quizzes for each category as well. These games and quizzes are
at different levels so that you move from easy to hard and can really challenge yourself. The app also
includes 5 stories and 5 songs in English and chinuk wawa. If you’ve never heard a long text spoken in
chinuk wawa, this would be a great way to hear what the language sounds like. There are also over 50
historical photos and captions on the app along with a tribal history video. One page on the app is a
search page. If you wanted to just look up a particular word, you could try out the search page. This app
is available for IPhone, IPads as well as Androids, and thanks to Tribal Council, the app is free.
If you have any questions please stop in and check them out or give us a call at (503)879-2226.
