Georgiana Mae LaChance Nichols
Dec. 27, 1923 – Feb. 29, 2016
A funeral service was held for Grand
Ronde resident and Tribal Elder Georgiana
Mae LaChance Nichols on Tuesday, March
8, at Sunnyside Little Chapel of Chimes and
burial occurred in its Memory Gardens. She
died Feb. 29, 2016, in Grand Ronde.
Mrs. Nichols was the daughter of Edwin
and Elvira LaChance. She was born in
Grand Ronde on Dec. 27, 1923. She was one
of four children. Her brother Tommy died
as a toddler and her brother Harry was lost in action during World
War II. She is survived by her sister Ann (Betty) Hyde.
While working in the shipyards in Portland, she met her future
husband, Fred Nichols. They were married shortly after meeting
and had been married 50 years when he died in November 1996.
For more than 30 years, they owned and operated the Ventura Park
Frozen Food Lockers in Portland.
Mrs. Nichols had four children. She is survived by her son, Rich-
ard, and daughter, Linda; sister, Ann; and 10 grandchildren and
numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her easy smile and willingness to
always help others.

Background Information for Survey of Tribal Member Opinion
ISSUE: The Tribal Government has contracted Robertson-Sherwood Architects for a feasibility
study of the costs and benefits of building and operating a fitness/recreation swim pool in
Grand Ronde. This survey of Tribal Members opinions about a new pool is part of the study.
PREVIOUS RESULTS: At the June, 2015 Grand Ronde Community Meeting 86% of local Tribal
Members supported a pool in Grand Ronde. In the 2015 Social and Economic Assessment
Swimming Pool was the top (56.4%) new Recreation/Leisure Opportunity choice of Local and
Regional Tribal Members and the third priority of All Tribal Members for a New Amenity in
Grand Ronde, after #1 Grocery Store and #2 New Businesses.
Prior to completing the survey on the following page, please read below the costs and revenue
projections for a new pool in Grand Ronde estimated 1 by Robertson-Sherwood Architects:
Pool Types and Uses: Three alternative pool types are being studied to estimate costs and
revenues and to define benefits and uses. Each alternative has a maximum swimmer capacity
of 137 people and includes indoor bathhouse, changing room and pool mechanical room. For
each alternative pool size and/or configuration of uses can be revised.
1) Indoor Multiple Uses Pool – Indoor, year-long operations, 3 lane by 25 yard pool for
recreation and fitness with connected therapy, exercise and shallow water learning/play
areas. Open to the Grand Ronde Community, and to public use.
Project Cost: $7.40 Million Annual Operating Costs: $224K-$343K Employment: 4.32 FTE.
2) Indoor/Outdoor Pool Complex – Small 20 yard by 15 yard, indoor, year-long operations,
therapy/learning pool. Separate outdoor, 3 month seasonal, 3 lanes by 25 yard pool with a
connected shallow water learning/play area. Indoor pool for Tribal Members use first
priority. Outdoor pool open to the community and public use. Could be phased – small,
indoor pool first, outdoor pool second. Project Cost: $3.95-5.11 Million
Annual Operating Costs: $209K-$372K Employment: 4.22 - 4.88 FTE
3) Outdoor Multiple Uses Pool with Removable Cover – Outdoor, year-long or seasonal
operations with framed, removable cover for winter. Includes a 3 lane by 25 yard pool for
recreation and fitness and connected therapy and shallow water learning/play areas. Open
to the community and public use. Project Cost: $4.54 Million
Annual Operating Costs: $245K-372K Employment: 4.32 FTE
