Food Bank provides
boxes, seeks help
If you receive SNAP, TANF, SSI or LIHEAP assistance, you au-
tomatically qualify for assistance at the Grand Ronde Food Bank,
9675 Grand Ronde Road.
No one will be turned away in need of a food box.
Upcoming food box distribution dates will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday,
Nov. 6; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14; and holiday food boxes
will be distributed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20. The Food Bank
will be closed during the week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 23-27.
Those who are unable to pick up a food box may fi ll out an autho-
rized representative form and that person can pick up a food box on
your behalf. The authorization is good for one year.
The Grand Ronde Food Bank – iskam mfkhmfk haws – is run by
Marion-Polk Food Share, which has been leading the fi ght to end
hunger since 1987 because no one should be hungry.
“It takes a community to fi ght local hunger,” says Food Bank Co-
ordinator Francene Ambrose. “Your gift of time and talent means so
much to individuals, families and children who are struggling. We are
looking for assistance in repacking food, putting food on the shelves,
handing out food boxes on distribution days and end-of-the-month
inventory. Groups are welcome and other opportunities are available.”
A mandatory volunteer training is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon
Friday, Nov. 13, for those who have not yet attended. The training will
cover safe food handling, non-discrimination and warehouse safety.
Call on non-distribution days to ensure someone is available to assist
you. You also can sign up for a monthly e-mail for the Food Bank
calendar and events, as well as follow the Food Bank on Facebook.
Contact Ambrose at 503-879-3663 or at fambrose@marionpolkfood-

Speed limit reduced on
part of Grand Ronde Road

The speed limit on the southern
part of Grand Ronde Road between
Highway 18 and the fi rst bridge has
been reduced to 20 mph because
the area meets the state criteria
for a business district, said Polk
County Public Works Director Todd
Whitaker.
The speed limit was officially
decreased from 40 mph by the Polk
County Board of Commissioners
during an Oct. 8 meeting.
Whitaker said that once an area
meets the state statute defi nition
for a business area, the speed limit
automatically becomes that which
is mentioned in state law.
Whitaker said the county exam-
ined the area after a request from
the Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde seeking to reduce the speed
limit on the road for improved pe-
destrian safety following the tragic
death of a Tribal youth who was
struck on Sept. 7 while crossing the
road on her bicycle.
Whitaker said the county also
is working with the Tribe’s Public
Works Department to install addi-
tional signage near Tyee Road and
also has requested that the Oregon
Department of Transportation con-
duct a speed study with the goal
of reducing the speed limit on the
entire length of Grand Ronde Road
between highways 18 and 22.
Grand Ronde Tribal Police Sgt.
Jake McKnight said officers will
be patrolling that section of Grand
Ronde Road and giving reminders to
drivers that they need to slow down
and obey the new speed limit. n
