Every year a group of Māori, from New Zealand, participate in the annual Canoe Journey with the Grand Ronde Canoe Family. The Canoe Journey is taking a hiatus this year, but a group of Māoris still came to Grand Ronde for a youth culture exchange, which included learning some of Grand Ronde’s songs and dances and they performed their songs and dances and taught the Tribal youth a haka. They also paddled locally with the Canoe Family and performed at the Contest Powwow. Chappy Harrison, a Māori waka (canoe) captain, teaches Tribal youth a haka during a youth culture exchange in the Tribal gym on Thursday, Aug. 13. A haka is a type of ancient Māori war dance, but it is also used when groups come together in peace and haka are still used during Māori ceremonies to honor guests and show the importance of the occasion.
