A group of five Marshall Memorial Fellows visited Grand Ronde and toured Chachalu Tribal Museum & Cultural Center and the Tribal campus with stops at Tribal Court, where they talked with Tribal Court Administrator Angela Fasana, the Governance Center and the Elders Activity Center. Tribal Public Affairs/ Publications Administrative Assistant Chelsea Clark led the tour and taught them a little bit about the Tribe and its history. The fellows are leaders in their fields and the fellowship was created by the United States in 1982 to introduce a new generation of European leaders to the United States. The Amateur Radio Emergency Service “QuakeEX I” exercise occurred on the same day that a 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal. The amateur radio event tested amateur radio emergency communication capabilities and more than 2,000 messages were sent during the exercise. The training provided an opportunity for county and state amateur radio emergency communication units to prepare for a worst-case scenario like a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The zone is a fault line that stretches from offshore British Columbia to California and is capable of producing large mega thrust earthquakes. Experts say there is a 40 percent chance of a large 9.0 or larger earthquake striking Oregon within the next 50 years.
